Jackson, Mississippi
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Jackson
Burial has long been the tradition across much of Mississippi, and many Jackson families still think first of a marked grave on family land. Cremation gives more choices: a wooden urn in the den, a small granite marker in the garden with ashes beneath, or a pendant holding a few grains. None of these has to be decided in a rush; the temporary container keeps ashes safe until the family agrees.
Some Jackson families bury a portion of the ashes in the family plot or on relatives' land in the county, and keep the rest at home in a keepsake. Others plant a magnolia or crape myrtle over part of the ashes. If you want the ashes divided, or a clay paw print made, tell the provider on the first call, since prints are taken before cremation.
Children often want to help, and a print can give them a job that feels useful. Let them roll the clay, press their own hand beside the paw or choose the ribbon for the frame. If the print is being taken after death, a vet or crematory can do it privately and hand it back, so children see only the finished keepsake.
Jackson's population is around 141,196, the largest of the 21 Mississippi communities we cover.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Pearl (6 miles), Ridgeland (9 miles) and Clinton (10 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
52,000
Jackson: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
141,196 ÷ 2.5 = 56,478 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 52,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
4,350
Jackson families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
52,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,350 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
In Mississippi, where only around <40%[5] of the dead are cremated, a pet's goodbye often ends with a blanket and a spade rather than a collection van. Before you wrap your pet, pause for three small things: a paw print, a snip of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind an ear, and the collar and tag. Once the grave is filled, none of those can be gathered again.
We take the Mississippi rate from Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Jackson, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasons in Jackson and a print that lasts
Strong sun in Jackson, especially around August, fades ink faster than most people expect. A framed paw print in a bright hallway can lose its crispness within a few summers. Hang it on a wall that doesn't catch direct light, choose UV-filtering glass and keep a scan of the original. And never leave a clay print or a resin cast inside a parked car, a garage or an attic in summer, where temperatures climb far above 92°F.
Hot months in Jackson are the best time for an outdoor project in the shade, but not for drying a print outdoors. Direct sun on an air-dry clay disc can warp it and crack the thin edges of the toes. Bring it inside, set it on a wire rack so air reaches both sides and give it two or three days before sealing it with a matte acrylic sealer.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Jackson, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

What Mississippi allows after your pet dies
Renters in Mississippi often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Mississippi allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
Mississippi keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Jackson.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Mississippi level first; our Mississippi rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Jackson or your HOA adds anything.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.
Ways families in Jackson keep a print close
Much of the Jackson area sits on Yazoo clay, which swells when wet and shrinks in drought, cracking driveways and tilting anything set loosely in the ground. An outdoor marker lasts better if it's heavy granite or bronze on a compacted gravel base. Humidity is hard on untreated wood and paper outdoors, so keep delicate keepsakes inside, away from damp exterior walls.

Questions people ask
Why does the Jackson page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025) reports about <40%[5] of Mississippi residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Jackson?
Usually yes. Pearl is about 6 miles away, Ridgeland is about 9 miles away and Clinton is about 10 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does the Jackson climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 92°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.
Is Jackson big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 52,000 Jackson households keep a dog or cat and around 4,350 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 141,196), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is there free support if making the print brings up a lot of grief?
Yes. Veterinary schools run free pet loss lines: Cornell's Pet Loss Support Hotline is staffed by veterinary students trained by grief counselors[9], and Tufts runs a volunteer helpline on Monday to Thursday evenings, with 24-hour voicemail[10]. Strong feelings while you hold your pet's paw are normal, and some people find the print is the moment it all becomes real. Our guides also cover early grief.
How do I get a nose print from my cat?
Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.
