Getting your pet's paw print in Hastings

Hastings, Nebraska

Who takes paw prints in Hastings

Many Hastings families have children and grandchildren who've moved to Lincoln, Kearney, Denver or farther afield. With several households wanting something, the ashes can be split among them: a little urn here, a locket there, and some saved for a flowering crab apple on the home place. Crematories can usually package portions separately if asked ahead of time, so tell them when you first call.

Hail, high wind and freeze-thaw winters on the plains are hard on garden memorials. Solid stone and cast metal endure there; resin figures and poured concrete chip and fade. A compacted gravel base keeps a marker level through each thaw. Anything glass or ceramic is better off indoors, perhaps on a windowsill where the morning light reaches it every day.

If your pet will travel to a crematory near Hastings, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Hastings. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.

With roughly 25,121 residents, Hastings is the 10th-largest of the 11 Nebraska communities we cover.

The closest communities we cover are Grand Island (23 miles, a larger centre), Kearney (37 miles) and Columbus (79 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Hastings too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

Our estimate

9,250

How many dog- or cat-owning households Hastings has (estimate)

How we calculated this

25,121 ÷ 2.5 = 10,048 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,250. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

770

dog and cat deaths per year in Hastings, our estimate

How we calculated this

9,250 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 770 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

About 62.2%[5] of people who die in Nebraska are cremated. With both burial and cremation common, you'll find pet cemeteries that set a print into a headstone and crematories that return one with the ashes. The print itself is the same either way. What changes is who takes it, so decide that early.

For the Nebraska figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Hastings rather than as pet data.

Getting a clean print in Hastings in any season

Snow and ice in January, February, March, November and December can hold up home-visit vets and collection vans around Hastings, sometimes by a day. If your pet dies during a storm or a cold snap, you may be caring for them longer than you expected. Keep them in the chilliest room of the house, away from heating, on a towel or blanket. Take the print early in that time, while the paws are still soft enough to press cleanly.

With 5 months of freezing average lows, Hastings winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Hastings are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

The Nebraska price table breaks costs down by product; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

Local rules worth knowing in Nebraska

There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Nebraska does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.

Start with the Nebraska rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Hastings's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Tell your child what's happening in plain words, and ask whether they'd like to help with the print. Our guide to print-making with children suggests roles for different ages.
  2. Give them a real job: they can roll the clay, pick the card, or write the name.
  3. Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
  4. If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
  5. Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
  6. Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.

Turning a print into something lasting

Hastings families often choose simple, lasting memorials: a granite block by the windbreak, a small oak urn on a mantel in town, a keepsake pendant for a grandchild. Nothing has to be decided right away, not even this season. The sealed container from the crematory can wait on a closet shelf while the family talks it over, even into next year.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Hastings?

Usually yes. Grand Island is about 23 miles away, Kearney is about 37 miles away and Columbus is about 79 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Hastings?

January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 87°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Roughly how many pets die in Hastings each year?

Our estimate is around 770. It comes from Hastings's population (about 25,121), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 9,250 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Why does the Hastings page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 62.2%[5] of Nebraska residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

My pet has been in cold storage. Can I still get a print?

Usually, yes. A pet kept in a clinic cooler or a cold room will have firm pads and stiff legs, so the trick is to warm the clay well and press it gently onto the paw instead of pressing the paw into the clay. Ink works too, with a light touch. If you can, ask for the print before your pet goes into cold storage.

How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?

Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
