Paw and nose prints in Summerlin: a calm guide

Summerlin, Nevada

Who takes paw prints in Summerlin

Summerlin interiors often lean clean and contemporary, and many families pick memorials to match: a matte ceramic urn, a framed ink paw print, a slim pendant holding a pinch of ash. You can leave the decision for weeks. Ashes returned in the crematory's plain box are fine on a closet shelf, so you can wait until the whole household agrees on something.

Las Vegas Valley residents move often, whether across town or out of state, so a memorial that travels easily makes sense. A small brass urn, a keepsake bracelet or a clay nose print fits in a carry-on. When relatives back east or in California want a portion, mention it when you book and the provider can portion the ashes out.

Children often want to help, and a print can give them a job that feels useful. Let them roll the clay, press their own hand beside the paw or choose the ribbon for the frame. If the print is being taken after death, a vet or crematory can do it privately and hand it back, so children see only the finished keepsake.

About 100,000 people live in Summerlin, which makes it the 6th-largest of the 11 Nevada communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Las Vegas, about 9 miles (15 km) away, which is where some providers serving Summerlin are based.

Our pages for Las Vegas (10 miles, a larger centre), North Las Vegas (14 miles, a larger centre) and Henderson (21 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Summerlin as well.

Our estimate

37,000

Summerlin: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

100,000 ÷ 2.5 = 40,000 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 37,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

3,050

Estimated dog and cat losses in Summerlin each year

How we calculated this

37,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,050 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation habits in Nevada and the print window

In Nevada, about 80.7%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

That Nevada rate is a human one, published by Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). We quote it for Summerlin only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Getting a clean print in Summerlin in any season

If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Summerlin, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

What owners in Summerlin typically pay for a print

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Summerlin, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Burial, scattering and prints in Nevada

Rules in Nevada mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

Not sure which office covers Summerlin? The Nevada local government directory is the official list.

The Nevada page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Summerlin's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.

How to make sure a print is taken in time

  1. Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
  2. Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
  3. Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
  4. Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
  5. Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
  6. If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.

Turning a print into something lasting

Mojave sun is hard on anything left outside: it fades paint, cracks resin and heats bronze enough to sting a hand in July. If you want an outdoor marker, natural stone or granite placed in a shaded corner of a desert-landscaped yard works best. Many Summerlin HOAs regulate yard features, so check the rules before placing anything. Glass and wood belong indoors.

Questions people ask

Roughly how many pets die in Summerlin each year?

Our estimate is around 3,050. It comes from Summerlin's population (about 100,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 37,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Which nearby towns can I compare with Summerlin?

The closest communities we cover are Las Vegas (about 10 miles), North Las Vegas (about 14 miles) and Henderson (about 21 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Summerlin too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Will I have to travel to Las Vegas to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Las Vegas (roughly 9 miles from Summerlin) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

How do Nevada attitudes to cremation compare?

Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) puts the Nevada human cremation rate at about 80.7%[5]. We show it on the Summerlin page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Is ink safe on my pet's paw?

Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.

Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?

If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[9] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
