Yonkers, New York
Arranging a paw print around Yonkers
In a Yonkers apartment or a floor of a two-family house, a memorial usually needs to be compact: a small urn on a bookshelf, a framed paw print in the hallway, or a locket carrying a small amount of ashes. Families here are often spread across the Bronx, Queens, New Jersey and upstate, so if several relatives want a keepsake, ask for small containers in addition to the main urn so the remains can be divided before they come back.
Yonkers has some beautiful places to remember a pet: the Hudson riverfront with the Palisades across the water, the walled gardens overlooking the river, and the Old Croton Aqueduct trail, which runs through the city. Public parks and the river have their own rules on scattering, so check before you go. Keeping ashes at home, or dividing them so a small portion can be scattered, are common choices.
Plenty of pets in Yonkers came from a rescue, a foster home or a breeder who still asks after them, and those people often treasure a copy of the print too. If your pet has a story like that, take one extra ink print, or have a scan made, and send it with a short note. Some rescue groups keep a memory wall of prints and photos, and it can be a comfort to know your pet's paw hangs there.
About 212,603 people live in Yonkers, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 49 New York communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Yonkers are based about 17 miles away in New York City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Mount Vernon (3 miles), New Rochelle (5 miles) and Scarsdale (6 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Yonkers as well.
Our estimate
78,000
Yonkers: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
212,603 ÷ 2.5 = 85,041 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 78,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
6,500
Yonkers families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
78,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 6,500 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation habits in New York and the print window
Around 55.7%[5] of people in New York are cremated, a middle-of-the-road rate that means local traditions vary from family to family. Some households want a grave to visit, others want ashes at home. A paw print works with both. It can sit on a shelf, be set into a garden stone above a grave or be engraved onto an urn.
That New York rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Yonkers only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
Humidity in Yonkers can still catch you out, even in a mild year. Air-dry clay that feels firm on top may be soft underneath, and sealing it too soon can trap moisture and leave a dull, cloudy finish. Turn the print daily, wait until it's pale and light all through, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer before framing.
Mild weather gives you choices that colder or hotter places don't. You can make a concrete stepping stone with your pet's paw pressed in almost any month, plant around it, or set a cast print into the garden where they used to lie. If you're not ready to decide, take the print in clay or ink now and plan the outdoor piece later.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[6] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[7]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[8]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[9].

Local rules worth knowing in New York
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for New York, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
New York keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Yonkers.
The New York page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Yonkers's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint next to the paw, if they'd like to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, and tuck the original away out of harm's way.
- Come back to it later. One child wants it framed the same week; another won't look at it for months.
Ways families in Yonkers keep a print close
Yonkers is home to many families with Irish, Italian, Latino, Caribbean and Eastern European roots, and traditions for remembering loved ones vary widely. Some families light a candle beside an urn on the anniversary; others keep a small shrine with a photo and flowers. An engraved urn, a stone for a small garden, or cremation jewelry can all fit whichever tradition feels right.

Questions people ask
Does the Yonkers climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 86°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January and February, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Yonkers?
Usually yes. Mount Vernon is about 3 miles away, New Rochelle is about 5 miles away and Scarsdale is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do New York attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the New York human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the Yonkers page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Is Yonkers big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 78,000 Yonkers households keep a dog or cat and around 6,500 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 212,603), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?
It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
Why take a paw print in Yonkers if I already have plenty of photos?
Photos show what your pet looked like; a print records something you touched every day, at actual size. We estimate Yonkers has around 78,000 dog- or cat-owning homes and loses about 6,500 of those pets a year. Most of those owners have hundreds of photos. The difference is that photos can be found later, while a print only exists if someone makes it before the body is cremated or buried, which is why it's worth doing first.
