Paw Print Keepsakes in North Dakota: what to know

Home euthanasia has become far more common across North Dakota, and it has made paw prints easier. When the vet comes to you, the goodbye happens on your pet's own bed, with no waiting room and no rush to leave. Many home-visit vets carry a clay kit. Even if they don't, you can take your own print before they arrive, in a room your pet knows.

Getting a paw print in North Dakota works much the same everywhere: you take it yourself, your vet takes it, or the crematory takes it before cremation. What changes from place to place is how much choice you have. In the bigger cities there are in-home vets, emergency hospitals and local makers who turn prints into jewelry or art. In smaller towns, the local vet is usually the one moment to ask.

We cover 10 communities in North Dakota, from Fargo, Bismarck and Grand Forks to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across North Dakota: summer highs reach about 85°F in Bismarck, while winter lows average -1°F in Grand Forks. In 100% of the North Dakota communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 10 communities in North Dakota on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in North Dakota

About 60.0%[1] of people who die in North Dakota are cremated. With both burial and cremation common, you'll find pet cemeteries that set a print into a headstone and crematories that return one with the ashes. The print itself is the same either way. What changes is who takes it, so decide that early.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[2], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[3]. Ask any maker in North Dakota whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[4] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in North Dakota, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[5]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

Landlords, parks and permits in North Dakota

Nothing in North Dakota restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official North Dakota local government directory.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Tell your child what's happening in plain words, and ask whether they'd like to help with the print. Our guide to print-making with children suggests roles for different ages.
  2. Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
  3. Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
  4. If the print is taken after death, let an adult or the vet do it, and show your child the finished keepsake.
  5. Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
  6. Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Nose prints, whisker collections and fur clippings sit beautifully alongside a paw print. A shadow box can hold all of them together with a collar tag. If you'd rather wear the memory, many jewelers can combine a paw print on one side and a nose print on the other.

If North Dakota is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in North Dakota?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in North Dakota?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in North Dakota say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in North Dakota?

Across North Dakota, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

How many dog and cat households are there in North Dakota?

By our estimate, there are about 170,000 dog- or cat-owning households across the North Dakota communities we cover. Each of those pets has a paw that can be pressed into clay or ink, and far fewer owners take a print in time than would like one.
