Paw print keepsakes in Norman

Norman, Oklahoma

Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Norman

Norman's mix of college rentals and family homes means memorial choices vary. Students and young renters often pick something small enough for a backpack, like a mini urn, a plaster pawprint or an ash-filled charm. Homeowners on the east side, with room to spare, might set a stone under a post oak or plant a redbud, Oklahoma's state tree, as a living tribute.

Some Norman households honor a companion in crimson and cream, the OU colors, in an engraved plaque or a painted keepsake chest. Others choose a quiet scattering at a place they loved, such as their own land near the lake, and save a spoonful for a tiny vessel at home. Asking for a second container at the start makes sharing easy.

Some crematories and keepsake makers serving Norman are based a drive away, around Oklahoma City or along main roads out of town. That's normal, and it doesn't stop you getting a print. Clay prints travel perfectly well once they're dry, and most engravers, jewelers and artists work from a clear photo or scan, so the original never needs to leave your home.

Norman is home to about 130,943 people, the 3rd-largest of the 26 Oklahoma communities we cover. Oklahoma City, roughly 17 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Norman run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Moore (8 miles), Del City (16 miles) and Midwest City (17 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

48,000

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Norman

How we calculated this

130,943 ÷ 2.5 = 52,377 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 48,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.

Our estimate

4,000

Estimated dog and cat losses in Norman each year

How we calculated this

48,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 4,000 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, about 58.6%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Oklahoma figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Norman tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Seasons in Norman and a print that lasts

Home burial in Norman runs to two different clocks. In January, February and December, frozen ground can make digging impossible, and some families keep their pet in a vet's cold storage until spring. In the heat of July, burial needs to happen quickly. Either way, the print belongs at the very start: before your pet goes into storage in winter, and within the first hours in summer.

Norman gets both extremes: highs around 93°F in July, and average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. Each season has its own risk for a print. In summer, air-dry clay can crack from drying too fast; in winter, plaster and clay can be ruined if they freeze before they've set. Whatever the month, dry and cure prints indoors, at room temperature, on a rack.

Paw print costs around Norman, line by line

By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Norman are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

What Oklahoma allows after your pet dies

Some towns and councils in Oklahoma run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

The rules that apply across Oklahoma (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Oklahoma page. Norman may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

Getting a paw print in Norman, step by step

  1. Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
  2. Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
  3. Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
  4. Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
  5. Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
  6. If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Oklahoma's red clay soils shrink in drought and swell after rain, which can tilt or crack a garden marker over time, especially near a foundation or driveway. A heavy granite stone set on a compacted gravel base stays put better than resin or thin concrete. Summer sun also fades painted finishes quickly, so engraved or bronze lettering lasts far longer outdoors.

the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, or see what other families chose in the poll results, the guides answer the longer questions and the blog the newer ones, See what each option includes on our services page. If you live between Norman and Midwest City, Moore, Tulsa and Oklahoma City, either page applies. Every other community in Oklahoma, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Norman?

Usually yes. Moore is about 8 miles away, Del City is about 16 miles away and Midwest City is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Roughly how many pets die in Norman each year?

Our estimate is around 4,000. It comes from Norman's population (about 130,943), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 48,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Does the Norman climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

How do Oklahoma attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Oklahoma human cremation rate at about 58.6%[5]. We show it on the Norman page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Why is my clay paw print still soft days later?

Humidity slows air-dry clay a lot. In a damp spell, a print that feels firm on top can stay soft underneath for days. Keep it indoors on a wire rack, turn it every day and wait until it's pale and light all through before sealing. Don't put air-dry clay in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable, or it can crack.

What should I seal a clay paw print with?

A water-based matte or satin acrylic sealer, brushed or sprayed in two thin coats, suits most air-dry clay. Test it on the back first. Seal only once the print is completely dry, which in hot or muggy weather can take longer than the packet says. Avoid hairspray and household glue, which yellow over time. Keep a sealed print indoors all year; sealer protects against dust and handling, not against frost in a Norman winter.
