Paw print keepsakes in Cleveland: where to start
Cleveland's older neighborhoods have shaded yards with dogwoods and azaleas, while the newer developments tend toward open lawns and back decks. Either setting can hold a small plaque or a planted memorial, and many people also choose something for inside: an urn beside the family photographs, a clay paw or feather impression, or a small wearable piece. Start by deciding whether you want the memorial visible to guests or kept private.
Heavy summer thunderstorms and the occasional January ice storm both take a toll on garden memorials in Bradley County. A polished granite marker or a cast bronze plate tends to shrug off both, while painted concrete may chip and fade. Setting any outdoor piece on a compacted gravel base keeps it from sinking into the soft red clay after a rainy spring.
Outdoor and barn cats are common around Cleveland, and they don't always die where you'd expect. If you find your cat in a shed, under a hedge or in a hay loft, bring them inside to a cool, quiet spot and lay them on a towel before you do anything else. A print is often still possible, even some hours later. Clean the pads gently with a damp cloth first, because dust and straw show up in clay and ink.
Cleveland is home to about 51,172 people, the 18th-largest of the 35 Tennessee communities we cover.
Families in Cleveland often end up using a provider from East Ridge (24 miles), Chattanooga (26 miles, a larger centre) and Dalton (29 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
19,000
Cleveland: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
51,172 ÷ 2.5 = 20,469 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 19,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
1,550
dog and cat deaths per year in Cleveland, our estimate
How we calculated this
19,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,550 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Tennessee, where about 48.9%[5] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.
The Tennessee percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Cleveland, not as a count of pets.
Clay, ink and the local climate
If you plan a 3D cast rather than a flat print, the Cleveland heat changes the chemistry. Two-part silicone molding putty and casting resin both set faster when it's warm, so in June, July and August you may have only a minute or two to press the paw before the putty firms up. Work in an air-conditioned room, keep the kit in a cool cupboard beforehand and mix only once your pet is settled and in position.
Strong sun in Cleveland, especially around July, fades ink faster than most people expect. A framed paw print in a bright hallway can lose its crispness within a few summers. Hang it on a wall that doesn't catch direct light, choose UV-filtering glass and keep a scan of the original. And never leave a clay print or a resin cast inside a parked car, a garage or an attic in summer, where temperatures climb far above 89°F.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Cleveland, check which approach each provider takes.

Landlords, parks and permits in Tennessee
Rules in Tennessee say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

Getting a paw print in Cleveland, step by step
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Turning a print into something lasting
In Tennessee, close to half of human funerals now end in cremation, and Cleveland families have grown comfortable with the idea for their animals as well. A common approach is to keep the main urn at home while a smaller portion goes into a scattering tube or keepsake for a sibling living elsewhere. If that is your plan, let the provider know before the cremation takes place.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Cleveland?
January: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 89°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do Tennessee attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Tennessee human cremation rate at about 48.9%[5]. We show it on the Cleveland page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Roughly how many pets die in Cleveland each year?
Our estimate is around 1,550. It comes from Cleveland's population (about 51,172), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 19,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cleveland?
Usually yes. East Ridge is about 24 miles away, Chattanooga is about 26 miles away and Dalton is about 29 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
What is a silver-clay paw print, and what does it cost?
Silver clay is a modeling clay made of fine silver particles and a binder. A jeweler presses your pet's paw, or a copy of it, into the clay, dries it and fires it in a kiln, which burns off the binder and leaves solid silver with the pad shapes intact. A Northeast US crematory network prices a clay or silver-clay paw print at $76[7]. Ask whether the piece is a direct impression or a scaled copy, and whether it comes as a pendant or a flat token.
