Who takes paw prints in Knoxville
The Great Smoky Mountains are about an hour away, and many Knoxville residents feel a deep connection to them. If you're thinking of scattering ashes in a park or forest, check the managing agency's rules first, since national parks and other public lands have their own requirements. A memorial tree planted at home, or a stone overlooking a garden view of the ridges, can create a lasting place to remember without restrictions.
East Tennessee has a long tradition of family burial plots and handmade markers, and many Knoxville owners carry that into how they remember a pet. A carved stone, a wooden marker, or a small urn kept at home until it can be buried on family land are all common choices. If you plan to bury ashes later, a durable, sealed urn will hold up better in the region's wet, clay-heavy soil.
If your pet is a senior with good days left, a routine vet visit in Knoxville can be a gentle moment to ask about a print. Some clinic teams will help take one there and then, with treats on hand. You can also do it at home after a long walk, when your dog is tired, or after a meal, when your cat is sleepy and relaxed.
About 202,021 people live in Knoxville, which makes it the 3rd-largest of the 35 Tennessee communities we cover.
If you want to compare providers, look at Maryville (15 miles), Farragut (16 miles) and Sevierville (20 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
74,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Knoxville
How we calculated this
202,021 ÷ 2.5 = 80,808 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 74,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
6,200
Knoxville families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
74,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 6,200 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

How Tennessee thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
In Tennessee, only about 48.9%[5] of people are cremated, and many families still prefer a grave. A paw print can become part of that grave: pressed into a concrete stepping stone, cast in resin and set into a headstone, or kept at home while your pet rests in the garden. Take the print before burial, while the paw is still easy to position.
We take the Tennessee rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Knoxville, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Getting a clean print in Knoxville in any season
In the hot months, take prints in a cool, air-conditioned room and dry the paw first so ink doesn't smudge. In January, when lows average about 26°F, warm the clay in your hands and keep plaster work indoors. A pet who has been in cold storage will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead of the other way round.
Planning an outdoor memorial in Knoxville? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[6] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[7]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[8]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[9].

What Tennessee allows after your pet dies
If you might move away from Tennessee one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Tennessee allows, set out below.

Start with the Tennessee rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Knoxville's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, call the kennel, sitter or local vet and ask them to keep your pet cool and take a paw print before anything else happens.
- Ask them to photograph the print and send it to you, so you know it's clear.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home instead of arranging cremation locally; the print goes with you either way.
- Ask for ink rather than clay if the print will be posted to you. A flat card survives the mail far better than damp clay.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.
Remembering your pet through their print
Knoxville's craft tradition runs deep, with potters, woodworkers and artists across the region, so handmade urns and memorial pieces are easy to find in style if not by name. A thrown pottery urn, a turned wooden box or a hand-forged keepsake can feel very personal. If you'd prefer something wearable, jewelry holding a small amount of ashes is another option, and it can be ordered after the main urn is chosen.

Questions people ask
How does Knoxville's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Knoxville, with average highs around 88°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Why does the Knoxville page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 48.9%[5] of Tennessee residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Knoxville?
Usually yes. Maryville is about 15 miles away, Farragut is about 16 miles away and Sevierville is about 20 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many pet owners live in Knoxville?
By our estimate, about 74,500 households in Knoxville have at least one dog or cat, and around 6,200 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 202,021, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[11] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
