Getting a paw print in Arlington: the local picture
Burial has long been common in Texas, but cremation now accounts for more than half of human deaths in the state, and keeping ashes at home no longer feels unusual in Arlington. A pet's ashes might rest in a ceramic urn by the family photos, in a pewter keepsake, beside an ink paw print, or in a small charm. Something compact also suits families who move around the Metroplex as jobs change.
River Legacy Parks along the Trinity River and the shoreline of Lake Arlington are where many Arlington families spent weekends outdoors with their animals. City parks and waterways have their own rules on scattering, so look them up first. Some families scatter half and keep half, and a shaded bench by the lake at sunset is a gentle place for a small family gathering, even if you choose not to scatter at all.
In a city like Arlington, most vets work with one or two pet crematories, and a clay or ink paw print is a routine add-on for both. Sometimes it's included in the cremation package; sometimes it's a small separate charge. Ask which, and ask who takes it: the clinic before collection, or the crematory at intake. Knowing that tells you when the window closes.
Arlington is home to about 402,134 people, the 7th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Arlington are based about 13 miles away in Fort Worth, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Pantego (3 miles), Dalworthington Gardens (4 miles) and Grand Prairie (6 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Arlington too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
150,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Arlington
How we calculated this
402,134 ÷ 2.5 = 160,854 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 150,000. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
12,500
dog and cat deaths per year in Arlington, our estimate
How we calculated this
150,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 12,500 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
In Texas, about 55.7%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Arlington rather than as pet data.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
If your pet dies at home during June, July, August and September, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.
Ink behaves differently in the Arlington heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[6] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Arlington are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[7], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[8]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

What the law in Texas does and doesn't cover
Burial rules in many places, including Texas, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
To find your county or city office in Texas, start with the official Texas local government directory.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Arlington's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Texas sun, heat and hail punish outdoor memorials. Painted wood bleaches, thin metal dents and cheap resin cracks within a few summers, while granite and Texas limestone take the weather in stride. A marker tucked into a flower bed on the shady side of the house, or a biodegradable urn beneath a young live oak, can become a lasting tribute if it is watered through August.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Arlington?
Usually yes. Pantego is about 3 miles away, Dalworthington Gardens is about 4 miles away and Grand Prairie is about 6 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is Arlington big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 150,000 Arlington households keep a dog or cat and around 12,500 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 402,134), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Why does the Arlington page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Fort Worth to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Fort Worth (roughly 13 miles from Arlington) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why did my air-dry clay paw print crack?
Usually because it dried too fast. In hot, dry weather, or near a heater or sunny window, the outside shrinks before the inside has set, and the thin edges of the toes crack first. Next time, dry it slowly indoors at room temperature, loosely covered with a cloth for the first day. Small cracks can be filled with a little fresh clay and smoothed with a damp finger.
How long before the print and ashes come back in Arlington?
By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[9], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Arlington which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.
