Paw Print Keepsakes in Texas: what to know

Two free tools help owners across Texas plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

Many owners in Texas take their pet's print long before the end, on a calm afternoon while their dog or cat is still a healthy senior. It's gentler, it gives a crisper result and it means the keepsake exists no matter how suddenly things change later. If your pet is still with you, that's the approach we'd suggest first.

We cover 325 communities in Texas, from Houston, San Antonio and Dallas to smaller towns. Conditions vary a lot across Texas: summer highs reach about 101°F in Laredo, while winter lows average 25°F in Amarillo. In 1% of the Texas communities we cover, average lows drop below freezing for three months or more, which matters for home burial.

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 325 communities in Texas on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

How Texas thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

On cremation, Texas sits in the middle, at about 55.7%[1] of human deaths, and for many families the choice is shaped by faith as much as by cost. If your beliefs lean toward burial, or you're simply unsure how you feel about cremating a pet, a paw print sits comfortably with either path. It involves nothing more than a gentle press into clay or onto card, and it leaves your pet exactly as they were.

That Texas rate is a human statistic published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing

Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[2] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Texas, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[3]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

By our estimate, around 765,000 US families a year[4] are open to a personalized pet keepsake, so providers in Texas are used to the question. The cheapest route is a home print, which costs only clay and a card. The next step up is a crematory add-on: by our estimate the median is about $32[5], and a clay paw impression can cost as little as $10[6]. Framing, engraving and silver are where totals climb.

What the law in Texas does and doesn't cover

Burial rules in many places, including Texas, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

County and city offices set many of the local rules. To find yours, start with the official Texas local government directory.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. For a horse, have the farrier out beforehand to trim the hoof and tidy it up. Clean the sole thoroughly and let it dry.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, use very soft clay or inkless paper and the lightest pressure. Tiny toes show best in clay.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, an inkless kit avoids ink on fur they'll groom later, and clay shows the long shape of a rabbit's foot.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.

From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone

Many families keep the clay print on a shelf beside a photo and the collar, and have a copy made for each person who loved the pet. If the family is spread out, a scanned print can be engraved onto several small keepsakes, so nobody has to choose who keeps the original.

Questions people ask

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

How many communities do you cover in Texas?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 325 communities in Texas, including Houston, San Antonio and Dallas. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

Can my vet in Texas take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Texas, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Texas say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

Is it better to use a local maker in Texas or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.
