Azle, Texas
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Azle
Azle families with land often want a memorial they can walk out to: a flat stone beneath a post oak, a cedar post with a nameplate, a small bed of native flowers. Those in town tend to prefer something for the mantel or a piece to wear. Decide first whether the memorial should belong to the property or travel with you.
Eagle Mountain Lake and the quiet country roads west of town are places many Azle families associate with their animals. Some keep most of the ashes at home and set a small share aside for a place like that. Scattering on private land needs the owner's permission, and public shorelines have their own rules, so check before the day. A lakeside bench or a quiet county road can be remembered without scattering anything at all.
Farm and country homes around Azle often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.
With roughly 15,365 residents, Azle is the 175th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. Fort Worth, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Azle run from there.
If you want to compare providers, look at Lake Worth (9 miles), White Settlement (11 miles) and Saginaw (11 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
5,650
How many dog- or cat-owning households Azle has (estimate)
How we calculated this
15,365 ÷ 2.5 = 6,146 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 5,650. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
470
Estimated dog and cat losses in Azle each year
How we calculated this
5,650 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 470 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Roughly 55.7%[5] of deaths in Texas end in cremation, which often means one family holds both preferences. A grandparent may want the dog buried under the apple tree while a younger owner would rather have ashes on the mantel. If that debate is happening in your house, start with the print. Everyone agrees on it, it has to come first anyway, and it buys you a calmer hour to decide the rest.
For the Texas figure we rely on NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Azle rather than as pet data.
Weather in Azle and your pet's print
Hot months in Azle are the best time for an outdoor project in the shade, but not for drying a print outdoors. Direct sun on an air-dry clay disc can warp it and crack the thin edges of the toes. Bring it inside, set it on a wire rack so air reaches both sides and give it two or three days before sealing it with a matte acrylic sealer.
If your pet dies at home during June, July, August and September, keeping them cool comes first and the print second. Move them to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and take the print within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. If collection is coming soon, ask the team to wait while you finish, or ask the crematory to take the print at intake.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Azle, check which approach each provider takes.

What the law in Texas does and doesn't cover
Rules in Texas mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Azle.
For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Azle can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A short checklist for a clean print
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, ask a nurse or technician to take it while you wait outside, and to show it to you before you go.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
North Texas hail can crack glazed ceramics and chip thin glass left outdoors, and summer sun bleaches most resins within a couple of years. For anything outside near Azle, granite, bronze or thick cast iron stands up best. Put a delicate keepsake on an inside windowsill instead, where you still see it daily and the weather cannot reach it. Bring outdoor pieces in during a hailstorm warning if they are small enough.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Texas?
For people, yes: about 55.7%[5] of Texas deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Azle follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Azle actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Fort Worth, about 16 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Azle and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is Azle big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 5,650 Azle households keep a dog or cat and around 470 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 15,365), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Azle?
The closest communities we cover are Lake Worth (about 9 miles), White Settlement (about 11 miles) and Saginaw (about 11 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Azle too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?
Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
