Highlands, Texas
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Highlands
Some Highlands families feel drawn to the San Jacinto River and nearby waters, and let some of the ashes go from a quiet bank or a canoe. Pick a calm day, keep away from swimmers and boat ramps, and let the breeze carry them away from you. A share kept at home means you always have somewhere to visit, whatever the river does.
Homes in Highlands often have room for a garden memorial: a stone at the base of a shade tree, a patch of lantana and salvia, or a stepping stone with a name and date. Indoors, a compact urn or a locket fits easily. Because a storm can force a quick departure, many families like having one memorial they can grab on the way out.
In a smaller place like Highlands, the local vet usually arranges aftercare and sends pets to a crematory in a larger centre such as Houston. That makes the vet the natural moment for a print, because once your pet leaves town it's much harder to ask. Tell the clinic you'd like a clay or ink print before collection, and check it's clear before you leave.
With roughly 7,000 residents, Highlands is the 225th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Houston, about 19 miles (31 km) away, which is where some providers serving Highlands are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Barrett (4 miles), Channelview (5 miles, a larger centre) and Sheldon (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
2,600
Highlands: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
7,000 ÷ 2.5 = 2,800 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 2,600. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
210
dog and cat deaths per year in Highlands, our estimate
How we calculated this
2,600 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 210 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
About 55.7%[5] of people in Texas are cremated, so cremation and burial are both common. Pet owners are split the same way: some bury at home or in a pet cemetery, others choose cremation. Either way, a print should be taken first. With a burial you usually have more time and can do it yourself; with cremation, ask the vet or crematory when you book.

Getting a clean print in Highlands in any season
Hot months in Highlands are the best time for an outdoor project in the shade, but not for drying a print outdoors. Direct sun on an air-dry clay disc can warp it and crack the thin edges of the toes. Bring it inside, set it on a wire rack so air reaches both sides and give it two or three days before sealing it with a matte acrylic sealer.
If you're planning a home goodbye in May, June, July, August and September, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Highlands
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Highlands vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

What Texas allows after your pet dies
Rules in Texas say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Highlands.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Texas level first; our Texas rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Highlands or your HOA adds anything.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Remembering your pet through their print
Humidity, hard rain and summer sun are tough on outdoor memorials in east Harris County, and floodwater can shift or bury anything set too low. Glazed ceramic and bronze survive a soaking; untreated wood, thin resin and painted concrete do not. Raising a marker on a slightly built-up bed keeps it visible and clean after high water, and a quick rinse clears any mud left behind.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Highlands?
Usually yes. Barrett is about 4 miles away, Channelview is about 5 miles away and Sheldon is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Highlands page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[5] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Houston to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Houston (roughly 19 miles from Highlands) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Highlands's weather affect pet aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Highlands, with average highs around 94°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?
It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
Can a paw print be taken after my pet has died?
Yes. A print can usually be taken in the first hours after death at home, and later by a vet or crematory before cremation. If the leg has stiffened, press the clay gently onto the paw rather than forcing the paw down. A print from a relaxed, living pet tends to be crisper, which is why many owners take one while their pet is still a healthy senior.
