Sherman, Texas
Getting a paw print in Sherman: the local picture
Sherman is an old county-seat town with Austin College on its north side and brick churches downtown, and memorial tastes here often lean traditional: a carved headstone-style marker for the garden, a walnut box with a brass plate, a framed portrait by the front door. Younger households may prefer glass keepsakes or jewelry holding a small share. Nothing stops a family from choosing both.
Families around Sherman often mark losses through church, school and neighborhood ties, and a pet is no exception for many of them. Pick an urn or a garden stone whenever it feels right; months is fine. The single time-sensitive decision is whether you want an inked pawprint, a nose rubbing or a curl of fur, because those are taken before cremation.
Supplies are easy to find even in a small town. Air-dry modeling clay, a washable non-toxic ink pad, card stock and baby wipes are enough for a first print. A purpose-made kit is kinder for fluffy paws and cats, but it may take days to arrive, so buy one while your pet is still well rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
About 52,417 people live in Sherman, which makes it the 72nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. McKinney, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Sherman run from there.
Families in Sherman often end up using a provider from Denison (10 miles), Anna (20 miles) and Celina (23 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
19,500
Sherman: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
52,417 ÷ 2.5 = 20,967 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 19,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,600
dog and cat deaths per year in Sherman, our estimate
How we calculated this
19,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,600 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
Cremation has become steadily more common in Texas, now chosen for about 55.7%[5] of those who die there, and newer pet aftercare providers have arrived with it. Some offer a 3D scan of the paw or a digital print file alongside the clay. If a provider mentions this, ask whether you'll receive the file itself, in a standard format, so you can take it to any maker later rather than only through them.

Weather in Sherman and your pet's print
If you're planning a home goodbye in June, July, August and September, consider booking the vet for early morning. Your pet will be more comfortable before the heat builds, the house is cooler for taking a print, and collection can happen before the afternoon peak. Take the print first, while the morning is still quiet. If you'd hoped to say goodbye outside, a shaded corner of the yard at dawn is kinder than the afternoon sun.
Summers in Sherman are hot: August averages highs around 93°F. Heat is hard on air-dry clay. In dry heat the surface skins over and cracks before the inside has set, so dry your print slowly indoors, away from sunny windows and air vents, and turn it every few hours. In humid heat the opposite happens: the clay stays soft for days, so be patient and don't try to speed it up in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in Sherman vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

Rules in Texas that touch on keepsakes
Nothing in Texas restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
Texas keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Sherman.
Start with the Texas rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Sherman's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your paw print plan for Sherman
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number on paper from reception before you leave.
- If no print was taken, call the crematory first thing the next morning and ask for one at intake.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Grayson County sits far enough north that winter brings real ice storms, while summer still pushes into the 90s. That swing cracks cheap concrete and splits resin. Granite, bronze and thick natural stone survive it. If you'd like a memorial tree, a bur oak or a pecan suits the red-and-black prairie soils here and should be planted in late fall once the heat has broken.

Questions people ask
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[5]. We show it on the Sherman page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Sherman?
The closest communities we cover are Denison (about 10 miles), Anna (about 20 miles) and Celina (about 23 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Sherman too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Will I have to travel to McKinney to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in McKinney (roughly 30 miles from Sherman) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Sherman?
There is no frozen-ground season here; average lows stay above freezing all year. The other pressure point is August, when highs around 93°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
