Paw print keepsakes in Kearns: where to start
Kearns is home to many Latino families as well as long-time Utah households, and remembrance customs reflect that mix. Some people keep the animal's picture beside a candle and flowers, the way they would honor a relative; others want nothing more than a plain engraved stone by the porch. No approach is more correct. Choose what your family will actually look at and feel comforted by, and add to it over time.
Most Kearns homes have small yards and short setbacks, which steers many households toward memorials that live indoors: a shelf urn, a clay imprint of a paw, a photo block, or a locket holding a few grains of ash. Renters and anyone planning a move often prefer portable pieces, since nobody wants to leave a grave behind when the house changes hands.
If your pet will travel to a crematory near Salt Lake City, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Kearns. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.
About 35,404 people live in Kearns, which makes it the 32nd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 10 miles (16 km) away, which is where some providers serving Kearns are based.
The closest communities we cover are West Valley City (3 miles, a larger centre), Taylorsville (3 miles) and West Jordan (3 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Kearns too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
13,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Kearns has (estimate)
How we calculated this
35,404 ÷ 2.5 = 14,162 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 13,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,100
Kearns families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
13,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,100 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]

39%[3]

11.18 years[4]

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
With about 46.1%[5] of people in Utah cremated, traditions here lean toward burial, and that often extends to pets. Whatever you choose, a print is the part you can do yourself, at home, with ordinary clay and a towel. It doesn't depend on local services, and it's the one keepsake that has to be made before anything else happens.
We take the Utah rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Kearns, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasons in Kearns and a print that lasts
Home burial in Kearns runs to two different clocks. In January, February and December, frozen ground can make digging impossible, and some families keep their pet in a vet's cold storage until spring. In the heat of July, burial needs to happen quickly. Either way, the print belongs at the very start: before your pet goes into storage in winter, and within the first hours in summer.
If you've bought a print kit to keep for later, store it indoors, not in the garage. In Kearns, a garage can top 94°F in July and drop below freezing in January, and both extremes spoil supplies: heat dries out ink pads and clay, frost splits plaster bags and stiffens molding putty. Check the kit every few months, and replace the clay if it has hardened in the packet.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
The print itself is cheap; what you turn it into is where the budget goes. At one urn retailer, an engraved paw print added to an urn typically costs $20–$35[6] and paw and nose print pendants start from $99.95[7]; a custom sterling silver charm made from your pet's actual print costs about $143 before the chain[8]. Custom silver print charms from one crematory network run $290 to $420[9].

Local rules worth knowing in Utah
Rules in Utah mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.
Not sure which office covers Kearns? The Utah local government directory is the official list.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Kearns's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Remembering your pet through their print
Anything placed outside in Kearns has to handle intense summer sun, dry winds and winter freezes. Stone and bronze keep their finish; painted resin and cheap ceramics tend to flake after two or three summers. A hardy shrub such as a lilac or a serviceberry, planted where the animal liked to rest, can serve as a living marker without adding clutter to a small lot.

Questions people ask
How does Kearns's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Kearns, with average highs around 94°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 10 miles from Kearns) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Roughly how many pets die in Kearns each year?
Our estimate is around 1,100. It comes from Kearns's population (about 35,404), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 13,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Kearns?
Usually yes. West Valley City is about 3 miles away, Taylorsville is about 3 miles away and West Jordan is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?
Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
