West Jordan, Utah
Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in West Jordan
Salt Lake Valley weather is rough on outdoor memorials: strong summer UV, winter snow, and dozens of freeze-thaw swings between November and March. Granite and bronze hold up; resin and concrete tend to fade and crack. If you prefer to plant, a hardy native such as a bigtooth maple, a serviceberry or a rabbitbrush suits the valley's dry summers and cold winters with little extra care.
Utah families are often large and spread across several towns and states, which makes sharing remains a frequent request in West Jordan. Asking the provider for one main vessel plus smaller labeled portions lets siblings, grandparents and grown children each keep a share. Nose-print jewelry, clay impressions and printed photos are easy additions that can be ordered in whatever number the family needs.
In a city like West Jordan, most vets work with one or two pet crematories, and a clay or ink paw print is a routine add-on for both. Sometimes it's included in the cremation package; sometimes it's a small separate charge. Ask which, and ask who takes it: the clinic before collection, or the crematory at intake. Knowing that tells you when the window closes.
West Jordan's population is around 116,812, the 3rd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 12 miles (20 km) away, which is where some providers serving West Jordan are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for South Jordan (3 miles), Kearns (3 miles) and Taylorsville (5 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
43,000
West Jordan: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
116,812 ÷ 2.5 = 46,725 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 43,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
3,600
Estimated dog and cat losses in West Jordan each year
How we calculated this
43,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,600 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation habits in Utah and the print window
In Utah, where only around 46.1%[5] of the dead are cremated, a pet's goodbye often ends with a blanket and a spade rather than a collection van. Before you wrap your pet, pause for three small things: a paw print, a snip of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind an ear, and the collar and tag. Once the grave is filled, none of those can be gathered again.
We take the Utah rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for West Jordan, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Home burial in West Jordan runs to two different clocks. In January, February and December, frozen ground can make digging impossible, and some families keep their pet in a vet's cold storage until spring. In the heat of July, burial needs to happen quickly. Either way, the print belongs at the very start: before your pet goes into storage in winter, and within the first hours in summer.
Planning an outdoor memorial in West Jordan? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.

What paw print keepsakes cost in West Jordan
A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in West Jordan vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

Landlords, parks and permits in Utah
Some towns and councils in Utah run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.

Your paw print plan for West Jordan
- Decide who will take the print: you at home, your vet, or the crematory at intake. The earlier in the process, the more control you have.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in West Jordan?
By our estimate, about 43,000 households in West Jordan have at least one dog or cat, and around 3,600 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 116,812, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Why does the West Jordan page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from West Jordan?
Usually yes. South Jordan is about 3 miles away, Kearns is about 3 miles away and Taylorsville is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in West Jordan?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 94°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
