Paw print keepsakes in Ogden: where to start
The east bench and the canyon trails are favorite places for many Ogden families, and some hope to release part of the ashes in the mountains. Much of the high country above the city is national forest, so check current Forest Service guidance first and stay well back from streams. Holding back a spoonful at home keeps the option open if you change your mind.
Ogden's railroad history shows up in its brick and iron, and a memorial with the same plain, sturdy character can feel right here: an engraved wooden box, a bronze plaque, or a boulder placed in a flower bed. For something more personal, a small glass-fronted case holding a collar, an ID tag and a snapshot can sit next to the ashes.
Dogs in and around a town like Ogden often work for a living: herding, hunting, guarding stock or riding in a truck all day. Their pads are thicker and more callused than a house dog's, with nicks and old scars that are part of their story. Those details show beautifully in clay. Use a firmer clay, roll it a little thicker and hold steady pressure for a few seconds so the ridges come through.
With roughly 89,510 residents, Ogden is the 9th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 32 miles (52 km) away, which is where some providers serving Ogden are based.
For a second opinion on price, South Ogden (4 miles), West Haven (5 miles) and Roy (6 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Ogden routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
33,000
Ogden: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
89,510 ÷ 2.5 = 35,804 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 33,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
2,750
Estimated dog and cat losses in Ogden each year
How we calculated this
33,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 2,750 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]

What local funeral habits mean for a print
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Utah, where about 46.1%[5] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.
The Utah figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Seasons in Ogden and a print that lasts
Plaster and cold don't mix well. Plaster sets more slowly in a cold room, and if the water in it freezes before it cures, the cast turns chalky and crumbles. In January, February, November and December, mix plaster with lukewarm water, let it set somewhere warm indoors and never leave a curing cast in a car, porch or shed overnight. The same goes for air-dry clay.
Snow and ice in January, February, November and December can hold up home-visit vets and collection vans around Ogden, sometimes by a day. If your pet dies during a storm or a cold snap, you may be caring for them longer than you expected. Keep them in the chilliest room of the house, away from heating, on a towel or blanket. Take the print early in that time, while the paws are still soft enough to press cleanly.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Ogden
If you'd like the print framed with a lock of fur, one Northeast crematory network charges $133 for that combination and $23 for a fur clipping on its own[6]. Some water cremation providers bundle a print in too: an Arizona aquamation service includes an ink paw print in individual packages from $75 to $349[7]. In Ogden, it's worth asking every provider what comes with the package before adding extras.

Rules in Utah that touch on keepsakes
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where Utah does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
The rules that apply across Utah (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Utah page. Ogden may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Choose one calm afternoon and do all the pets together, beginning with whichever one is least bothered by handling.
- Label everything before you start: a name on the back of each card, or a letter scratched into the underside of each clay disc.
- Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal and clean every paw straight away, so no one licks ink off anyone else.
- Keep each turn short, a couple of minutes per pet, with a treat after every press.
- Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
- Store the set together and date each one on the reverse, so that years from now none of them has gone astray.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Ogden's winters bring snow, ice and repeated freezing, which crack concrete and loosen cheap plaques. A flush granite marker or a bronze plate on a stone base will outlast most resin pieces. For indoor memorials, glass, ceramic and wood all hold up well, and a small urn can go on a window ledge that catches the morning light off the mountains.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Utah?
For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ogden follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How does Ogden's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Ogden, with average highs around 87°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ogden?
The closest communities we cover are South Ogden (about 4 miles), West Haven (about 5 miles) and Roy (about 6 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ogden too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Ogden actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 32 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Ogden and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
What is a silver-clay paw print, and what does it cost?
Silver clay is a modeling clay made of fine silver particles and a binder. A jeweler presses your pet's paw, or a copy of it, into the clay, dries it and fires it in a kiln, which burns off the binder and leaves solid silver with the pad shapes intact. A Northeast US crematory network prices a clay or silver-clay paw print at $76[6]. Ask whether the piece is a direct impression or a scaled copy, and whether it comes as a pendant or a flat token.
Can I get a print if my pet is being cremated near Salt Lake City?
Yes. Many crematories take a print at intake and return it with the ashes. But if the crematory is some distance from Ogden, it's easier to take the print locally, either yourself at home or through your vet before collection. That way you can check it's clear and redo it if needed.
