Getting a paw print in Payson: the local picture
Snowy winters and sunny, dry summers wear down outdoor memorials quickly. Stone and bronze are the long-lasting choices, and placing a marker where it's shaded in the afternoon slows fading. You could also plant something: a fruit tree in a south Utah County yard, where orchards have always done well, grows into something the family will see every spring.
Payson celebrates Onion Days each Labor Day weekend and keeps a strong small-town identity, and many families prefer memorials that feel homemade and personal. A hand-lettered garden stone, a wooden box made by a grandparent, or a quilt square with a paw print stitched on can mean more than anything store-bought. Mix handmade touches with a sturdy container for the ashes.
Around Payson, a home-visit vet may be covering a wide area and can only give you a rough arrival window. Waiting is hard, but it can also be the time to take the print, while your pet is settled and you're not watching the door. Lay out a towel, the clay and a few treats in the room where they're resting. By the time the car pulls in, the keepsake can already be drying on the table.
About 24,630 people live in Payson, which makes it the 42nd-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Payson are based about 51 miles away in Salt Lake City, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
If you want to compare providers, look at Santaquin (5 miles), Spanish Fork (7 miles) and Springville (11 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
9,050
How many dog- or cat-owning households Payson has (estimate)
How we calculated this
24,630 ÷ 2.5 = 9,852 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 9,050. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
9,050 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 760 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

How Utah thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
In Utah, where only around 46.1%[5] of the dead are cremated, a pet's goodbye often ends with a blanket and a spade rather than a collection van. Before you wrap your pet, pause for three small things: a paw print, a snip of fur from somewhere hidden, like the chest or behind an ear, and the collar and tag. Once the grave is filled, none of those can be gathered again.
We take the Utah rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Payson, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
When the weather works against clay and ink
Home burial in Payson runs to two different clocks. In January, February, November and December, frozen ground can make digging impossible, and some families keep their pet in a vet's cold storage until spring. In the heat of July, burial needs to happen quickly. Either way, the print belongs at the very start: before your pet goes into storage in winter, and within the first hours in summer.
Planning an outdoor memorial in Payson? A garden stone set with your pet's print is lovely, but concrete won't cure properly in frost and can crack in extreme summer heat. Take the print now in clay or ink, keep it safe inside and make the stone in spring or autumn, when the weather is mild and the ground is workable.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Payson
Some providers include the print in the package. A Virginia crematory, for example, includes a paw print and a fur clipping with every private cremation package, which run $189–$300[6]. Others charge separately: a Northeast crematory network lists $49 for ink paw prints, $76 for a clay or silver-clay print and $111 framed[7]. When you compare quotes in Payson, check which approach each provider takes.

Burial, scattering and prints in Utah
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Utah, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
Not sure which office covers Payson? The Utah local government directory is the official list.
The Utah page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Payson's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Choose one calm afternoon and do all the pets together, beginning with whichever one is least bothered by handling.
- Label everything before you start: write each name on the reverse of its card, or scratch an initial into the base of each clay disc.
- Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal then wipe each paw clean the moment you're done, so nobody licks ink off a housemate.
- Keep each turn short, a couple of minutes per pet, with a treat after every press.
- Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
- Store the set together with the date written on the back, so no print goes missing over the years.
Remembering your pet through their print
Families with deep roots in Payson often have siblings and cousins spread through Utah Valley, Sanpete County and beyond. If more than one household would like a portion of the ashes, tell the cremation provider before the process begins. A main urn for the farmhouse or family home, plus a few pendants or thimble-sized urns, lets each branch keep something close without anyone dividing remains by hand.

Questions people ask
Why does the Payson page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[5] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Payson each year?
Our estimate is around 760. It comes from Payson's population (about 24,630), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 9,050 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Payson actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 51 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Payson and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Does the Payson climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 93°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
What should I seal a clay paw print with?
A water-based matte or satin acrylic sealer, brushed or sprayed in two thin coats, suits most air-dry clay. Test it on the back first. Seal only once the print is completely dry, which in hot or muggy weather can take longer than the packet says. Avoid hairspray and household glue, which yellow over time. Keep a sealed print indoors all year; sealer protects against dust and handling, not against frost in a Payson winter.
Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?
Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
