Paw and nose prints in Provo: a calm guide

Provo, Utah

How owners in Provo get a paw print

Students and young families often move on after a few years in Provo, so portability matters when choosing a memorial. A small urn, a piece of keepsake jewelry or a framed paw print travels easily to a new city or across the country. If parents or siblings back home would like some of the remains, request separate labeled portions when you first arrange the cremation.

With BYU and a strong culture of family history, many Provo households keep careful records and photographs of the animals they have loved. Memorial choices often reflect that: a scrapbook page, a framed collage, an engraved keepsake box, a pendant, or a small stone for the garden. Decide how many relatives may want a share before the ashes come back.

Plenty of pets in Provo came from a rescue, a foster home or a breeder who still asks after them, and those people often treasure a copy of the print too. If your pet has a story like that, take one extra ink print, or have a scan made, and send it with a short note. Some rescue groups keep a memory wall of prints and photos, and it can be a comfort to know your pet's paw hangs there.

Provo is home to about 114,527 people, the 4th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 39 miles (62 km) away, which is where some providers serving Provo are based.

Provo sits within easy reach of Orem (5 miles), Springville (5 miles) and Spanish Fork (8 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Provo; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

42,000

Provo: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

114,527 ÷ 2.5 = 45,811 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 42,000. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

3,500

dog and cat deaths per year in Provo, our estimate

How we calculated this

42,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,500 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

A pet at home in Provo

How Utah thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Utah, where about 46.1%[5] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.

That Utah rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Provo only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Getting a clean print in Provo in any season

In the hot months, take prints in a cool, air-conditioned room and dry the paw first so ink doesn't smudge. In January, when lows average about 24°F, warm the clay in your hands and keep plaster work indoors. A pet who has been in cold storage will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead of the other way round.

Home burial in Provo runs to two different clocks. In January, February, November and December, frozen ground can make digging impossible, and some families keep their pet in a vet's cold storage until spring. In the heat of July, burial needs to happen quickly. Either way, the print belongs at the very start: before your pet goes into storage in winter, and within the first hours in summer.

What owners in Provo typically pay for a print

Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Provo.

What the law in Utah does and doesn't cover

Nothing in Utah restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Provo or your HOA adds anything.

Your paw print plan for Provo

  1. Choose one calm afternoon to print every pet in the house, starting with the most relaxed animal.
  2. Label everything before you start: write each name on the reverse of its card, or scratch an initial into the base of each clay disc.
  3. Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal and clean every paw straight away, so no one licks ink off anyone else.
  4. Keep each turn short, no more than a minute or two each, and reward every press with a treat.
  5. Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
  6. Store the set together and date each one on the reverse, so that years from now none of them has gone astray.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Provo's climate swings between hot, dry summers and snowy winters, and outdoor memorials have to cope with both. Polished granite and cast bronze keep their lettering; softer stone and painted concrete flake after a few winters. For a planted tribute, native bigtooth maple, Gambel oak or a flowering serviceberry fits the local climate and turns brilliant shades of orange and red each October.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Provo?

The closest communities we cover are Orem (about 5 miles), Springville (about 5 miles) and Spanish Fork (about 8 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Provo too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Utah?

For people, yes: about 46.1%[5] of Utah deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Provo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Provo?

January, February, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 95°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

Is Provo big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 42,000 Provo households keep a dog or cat and around 3,500 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 114,527), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

How do I get a nose print from my cat?

Cats have small noses and dislike being fussed, so pick a sleepy moment. Use an inkless wipe or the lightest dab of pet-safe ink on a soft sponge, then touch a small folded card to the nose from the front and lift away. Expect a faint, partial print; that's normal. Take several attempts over a few days rather than persisting in one session, and wipe the nose clean afterwards so your cat doesn't lick the residue.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Provo?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[9]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
