Arranging a paw print around Fairfax
Blazing Julys and hard January frosts crack flimsy materials, so granite and bronze are safer bets outside. If you want something growing, a dogwood or eastern redbud suits the local clay, blooms each April, and fits the modest yards of Fairfax's older neighborhoods without crowding the house or blocking a neighbor's light. Autumn planting gives roots a head start. Both stay compact.
Plenty of Fairfax households include federal employees, contractors, graduate students and service members who relocate every few years. A remembrance that packs flat, like a brass urn the size of a teacup, a slim photo album or an engraved locket, goes easily from apartment to house to overseas post. Engraving often takes several weeks, so order early for a birthday or anniversary.
Outdoor and barn cats are common around Fairfax, and they don't always die where you'd expect. If you find your cat in a shed, under a hedge or in a hay loft, bring them inside to a cool, quiet spot and lay them on a towel before you do anything else. A print is often still possible, even some hours later. Clean the pads gently with a damp cloth first, because dust and straw show up in clay and ink.
Fairfax is home to about 26,772 people, the 24th-largest of the 32 Virginia communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Fairfax are based about 11 miles away in Arlington, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are McLean (9 miles), Herndon (9 miles) and Great Falls (10 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Fairfax too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.

How Virginia thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
In Virginia, about 55.6%[5] of people are cremated, and that share has been rising for years. Pet crematories have multiplied along with it, and most now offer paw prints, nose prints and fur clippings. Families who grew up with burial don't always know to ask, so it's worth saying plainly that you want one.
We take the Virginia rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Fairfax, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Getting a clean print in Fairfax in any season
With 3 months of freezing average lows, Fairfax winters are hard on posted parcels too. If you're sending a clay print away to be cast in metal or scanned for jewelry, wrap it well, avoid shipping over a weekend and send a photo or scan first where the maker accepts one. Then the original never has to leave your warm house at all.
Indoor heating in January, February and December makes the air in Fairfax homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Fairfax.

Burial, scattering and prints in Virginia
Renters in Virginia often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Virginia allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.

Getting a paw print in Fairfax, step by step
- Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
- Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
- Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
- Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
- Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
- Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Fairfax is home to families from around the world, including large Korean, Vietnamese, Salvadoran and Indian communities in the surrounding county, and memorial customs vary widely. Explain your family's traditions to the provider, including any wish to divide remains among households at home and abroad. Ask as well whether the return of the ashes can be timed around religious observances or family travel.

If you live between Fairfax and Newport News, Richmond, Arlington and Virginia Beach, either page applies. Every other community in Virginia, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask
How many pet owners live in Fairfax?
By our estimate, about 9,850 households in Fairfax have at least one dog or cat, and around 820 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 26,772, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Will I have to travel to Arlington to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Arlington (roughly 11 miles from Fairfax) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Why does the Fairfax page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.6%[5] of Virginia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Does the Fairfax climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 88°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
How many households in Fairfax have a dog or cat?
By our estimate, about 9,850 households in Fairfax have a dog or a cat, and around 820 dogs and cats are lost there each year. We calculate this from the city's population, average household size and national pet ownership and lifespan figures. The method is shown on this page.
