Pullman, Washington
Arranging a paw print around Pullman
A big share of Pullman is students and early-career faculty who relocate after a few years, so a memorial that travels makes sense. A small urn, an inked paw print in a frame, or a tiny vial of ashes on a chain can follow you to the next job or degree. A heavy stone may not suit a rental you'll leave in June. Choose something you can pack in minutes.
Palouse winters bite and summers bake, and both punish anything left outside. Frost splits cheap concrete and resin, while high summer sun bleaches paint. For a garden on land you own, go with granite or bronze, bed it on gravel so frost heave doesn't tip it, and pick a spot with some afternoon shade. Wipe off dust after harvest season.
Supplies are easy to find even in a small town. Air-dry modeling clay, a washable non-toxic ink pad, card stock and baby wipes are enough for a first print. A purpose-made kit is kinder for fluffy paws and cats, but it may take days to arrive, so buy one while your pet is still well rather than waiting until you need it urgently.
Pullman's population is around 33,756, the 39th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Pullman are based about 65 miles away in Spokane, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
Our pages for Moscow (8 miles), Lewiston (25 miles) and Spokane Valley (64 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Pullman as well.
Our estimate
12,500
Pullman: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
33,756 ÷ 2.5 = 13,502 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,050
dog and cat deaths per year in Pullman, our estimate
How we calculated this
12,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,050 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
39%[3]
39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Because roughly 79.1%[5] of people in Washington are cremated, ashes jewelry and keepsake urns are familiar here. A paw print pairs naturally with them: an urn engraved with your pet's actual paw, or a pendant with the print on the front and a pinch of ashes inside. If that appeals, ask for a clear flat print that a maker can work from.
We take the Washington rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Pullman, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Seasons in Pullman and a print that lasts
Winter in Pullman brings average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, April, November and December. Cold makes modeling clay stiff, so warm it in your hands for a few minutes and roll it smooth before pressing. If your pet has been kept in a cold garage, a clinic cooler or a crematory's cold room, the paw pads will be firm, so press the clay onto the paw rather than the paw into the clay.
If you're planning a garden stone with your pet's print pressed into it, the Pullman winter will decide your timing. Concrete and mortar need temperatures above freezing to cure properly, so take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors. In spring, once the ground has thawed, you or a local stonemason can use it to make the outdoor memorial.

Paw print costs around Pullman, line by line
If the print is heading for jewelry, budget for the metal rather than the print. By our estimate, a typical sterling silver pet pendant costs about $190[6], and entry-level solid gold pieces at the same retailer cost about 15 times the silver equivalent[7]. Ask any maker in Pullman whether the quote includes the chain, a proof image before production and engraving on the back, because those three extras are where quotes differ most.

What Washington allows after your pet dies
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Washington, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
To find your county or city office in Washington, start with the official Washington local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Washington level first; our Washington rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Pullman or your HOA adds anything.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Keeping the print and the memory close
Students often share an animal with roommates, a partner or family back home, and more than one person may want to keep something. A primary urn and a few mini urns or charms can be divided among them. Tell the provider before cremation, ask how portions are sealed for air travel, and put a clear label on each one. Include dates as well.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Pullman actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Spokane, about 65 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Pullman and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Pullman page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 79.1%[5] of Washington residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Pullman?
The closest communities we cover are Moscow (about 8 miles), Lewiston (about 25 miles) and Spokane Valley (about 64 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Pullman too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the Pullman climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In August, with highs near 86°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why do so many owners miss the chance to take a print?
Because a print has a window. By our estimate, around 1,050 dogs and cats die in Pullman each year, many of them suddenly or at an emergency clinic, when a clay kit is the last thing on anyone's mind. Taking a print while your pet is well, or asking for one when you book aftercare, is the simplest way not to miss it.
Can I post a clay paw print in winter?
Yes, but wrap it well. A fully dried and sealed clay print is sturdy, but freezing temperatures in a delivery van can crack one that's still slightly damp. Make sure it's completely dry, wrap it in bubble wrap inside a rigid box and avoid shipping over a weekend. Better still, send a scan if the maker accepts one.
