Paw and nose prints in SeaTac: a calm guide

SeaTac, Washington

Who takes paw prints in SeaTac

In a rental apartment, compact memorials make sense: a palm-sized urn beside the TV, a framed print or a locket with a trace of ashes. If you might move, choose something easy to pack. Wall shelves save floor space, and a small photo frame can stand beside the urn. For anyone with a garden, stone or bronze stands up to the damp far better than wood or resin.

Relatives here are often spread across continents, and some families like to send a portion of ashes to someone overseas. Rules on carrying or mailing cremated remains vary by country and carrier, so check before you promise. Keeping one main vessel at home and a few tiny containers for local family is the simplest route. A framed photo with a short caption can join the urn on the shelf.

Farm and country homes around SeaTac often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.

SeaTac is home to about 34,578 people, the 37th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover. Seattle, roughly 11 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover SeaTac run from there.

If you want to compare providers, look at Tukwila (3 miles), Burien (3 miles) and Des Moines (4 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.

Our estimate

12,500

SeaTac: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

34,578 ÷ 2.5 = 13,831 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,500. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

1,050

dog and cat deaths per year in SeaTac, our estimate

How we calculated this

12,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 1,050 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

A pet at home in SeaTac

Local customs and the keepsake you keep

With about 79.1%[5] of people in Washington cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.

Source for the Washington number: Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes a pet cremation rate for SeaTac, so the human figure is the best local signal available.

When the weather works against clay and ink

Because SeaTac rarely has extreme heat or hard frost, the timing of a print is really about your pet and your family, not the weather. A senior pet on a good day, a quiet weekend morning and an unhurried hour are worth more than any perfect season. Just avoid November for outdoor concrete work, when damp slows curing.

SeaTac has a fairly mild climate, which is good news for prints. Air-dry clay usually dries in two or three days at room temperature, and ink behaves predictably. The main thing to watch is damp: in November, the wettest month, clay can take longer to harden, so keep it off windowsills and away from bathrooms until it feels completely dry and light.

What owners in SeaTac typically pay for a print

A paw print is one of the least expensive keepsakes there is. Many US crematories sell it as a small add-on: one Arizona provider lists a clay paw impression at $10, a nose print at $10 and a laser-engraved paw print at $15[6], and across the US price lists we've checked, paw-print add-ons have a median of about $32[7]. Prices in SeaTac vary by provider, so ask whether a print is already included before you pay extra.

We keep the detailed Washington price table on one page so it stays current: see Washington prices.

Rules in Washington that touch on keepsakes

Burial rules in many places, including Washington, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

To find your county or city office in Washington, start with the official Washington local government directory.

The rules that apply across Washington (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Washington page. SeaTac may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. For a horse, book the farrier to trim and clean the hoof first. Pick out the sole and dry it well.
  2. Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay laid on a board, or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Have someone hold the foot steady.
  3. Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
  4. For a bird or a very small pet, use very soft clay or inkless paper and the lightest pressure. Tiny toes show best in clay.
  5. For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
  6. Dry and store every print indoors, then take a photo so any maker can use the picture, not the original.

Keeping the print and the memory close

SeaTac ranks among Washington's most diverse cities, with families from East Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia and elsewhere, and customs for honoring an animal differ widely. Some keep the remains beside a home altar; others prefer a charm or small keepsake they can carry. No single tradition is right, and a single cremation can fill a main urn and several small pieces if you ask beforehand. Label each portion clearly.

Questions people ask

Does the SeaTac climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In August, with highs near 78°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. Winters here are mild enough that burial or scattering is possible in any month.

Which nearby towns can I compare with SeaTac?

The closest communities we cover are Tukwila (about 3 miles), Burien (about 3 miles) and Des Moines (about 4 miles). Providers based in those places often serve SeaTac too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Is cremation common in Washington?

For people, yes: about 79.1%[5] of Washington deaths end in cremation, according to Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in SeaTac follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is SeaTac big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?

Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 12,500 SeaTac households keep a dog or cat and around 1,050 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 34,578), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.

How do I get a clear print from very furry paws?

Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors, leaving the fur around the edge, which gives the print its outline. For cats, long-haired dogs and rabbits, an inkless kit or soft clay often works better than ink. Rabbits have no pads at all, so clay shows the long shape of the hind foot beautifully.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
