A paw print to keep, in Laramie

Laramie, Wyoming

Arranging a paw print around Laramie

Wyoming's human cremation rate is about 79%, and taking ashes to a place with meaning is a widely shared idea here. Some Laramie families divide a pet's ashes, keeping part at home and scattering part on private land or carrying a small amount on a hike. Tell the provider before cremation if you'd like several containers, and ask whether small vessels come sealed for shipping to relatives.

Outdoor memorials at this altitude face strong UV, hail, wind and long freezes. Granite and bronze endure; flimsy resin and painted pine tend to fade or split within a few seasons. Setting a sapling above a compostable urn works best in early summer here, when the ground has thawed; hardy natives such as chokecherry or aspen stand a better chance at 7,000 feet than ornamental nursery trees.

If your pet will travel to a crematory near Laramie, the journey can take a day or two, depending on collection schedules. Many crematories offer a print at intake, which is a useful backup. But if you can, take your own before your pet leaves Laramie. That way you have it in your hands and don't depend on anyone else remembering.

Laramie is home to about 32,284 people, the 4th-largest of the 10 Wyoming communities we cover.

Laramie sits within easy reach of Cheyenne (43 miles, a larger centre), Fort Collins (57 miles, a larger centre) and Windsor (68 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Laramie; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Our estimate

12,000

How many dog- or cat-owning households Laramie has (estimate)

How we calculated this

32,284 ÷ 2.5 = 12,914 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 12,000. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

990

Estimated dog and cat losses in Laramie each year

How we calculated this

12,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 990 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

39%[3]

39% of US households own a cat, which is about 53 million households.

11.18 years[4]

US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Cremation accounts for about 78.5%[5] of human deaths in Wyoming, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Wyoming figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in Laramie tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.

Clay, ink and the local climate

Clinics and crematories in and around Laramie often keep pets in cold storage before cremation, especially in January, February, March, April, October, November and December when collection runs can be delayed by weather. That doesn't prevent a print, but it helps to ask before your pet goes into the cooler. A quick print while the paw is still soft is far easier than one taken later from a cold, stiff paw.

Indoor heating in January, February, March, April, October, November and December makes the air in Laramie homes very dry, which is its own problem for clay. A print left near a radiator, wood stove or forced-air vent can shrink unevenly and split along the thin toe edges. Dry it in a cooler room, away from heat sources, and lay a slightly damp cloth loosely over it for the first day to slow things down.

Paw print costs around Laramie, line by line

Compared with the cremation itself, a print is a small line on the bill. Private dog cremation averages about $260[6] in the US, while paw-print add-ons at crematories range from about $10 to $76[7]. The bigger spend comes later, if you choose jewelry: a paw-print bangle bracelet from one crematory network costs $385[8]. Use the table to plan what fits your budget in Laramie.

What the law in Wyoming does and doesn't cover

Renters in Wyoming often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Wyoming allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.

For Wyoming's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Wyoming guide. Local rules in Laramie can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Take a breath. If your pet has just died at home, there is usually time for a print in the first few hours. Lay them on a towel in a cool room.
  2. Gather what you need: clay warmed in your hands, or card taped to a board with a pet-safe ink pad, plus a damp cloth.
  3. If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Press it gently onto the pads rather than forcing the paw down.
  4. Take a nose print too if you'd like one, with a light touch of ink or an inkless wipe.
  5. Call your vet or crematory afterwards, and let them know a print has already been made so they can skip that step.
  6. Let the print dry indoors, away from heaters and sunny windows, before you frame or post it anywhere.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Many Laramie residents are students or early-career faculty who expect to move, so it pays to pick memorials that travel: a small urn, an inked pawprint card, or a ring or pendant sealing in a little ash. If you rent, a keepsake you can pack is easier than a garden marker. Families rooted on the plains may prefer a stone set near the house.

Questions people ask

Which nearby towns can I compare with Laramie?

The closest communities we cover are Cheyenne (about 43 miles), Fort Collins (about 57 miles) and Windsor (about 68 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Laramie too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.

Does the Laramie climate change what I should do first?

Only the timing. In July, with highs near 81°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.

How many pet owners live in Laramie?

By our estimate, about 12,000 households in Laramie have at least one dog or cat, and around 990 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 32,284, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Why does the Laramie page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 78.5%[5] of Wyoming residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Can I get my dog's nose print?

Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.

Is it possible to print a guinea pig's or hamster's feet?

Yes, but it takes patience and a light touch. Tiny feet leave only faint marks in ink, so very soft modeling clay or an inkless kit usually works better. Warm the clay well, cradle your pet in a towel on your lap and press the clay gently up to the foot rather than lowering the foot. For a hamster, one clear hind foot is plenty. If your pet is frightened, stop; letting your vet take it after death is gentler.
