Ballarat, Victoria
How owners in Ballarat get a paw print
Seven in ten Australians choose cremation for themselves, so ashes at home are nothing unusual in Ballarat. Bigger suburban blocks leave room for a garden memorial: a flowering gum, a rose that copes with cold winters, or a plaque set into a garden bed. Nothing has to be settled straight away. Sealed in their container, ashes can wait quietly on a shelf until the family agrees on a plan.
Ballarat families often have one foot in Melbourne, about an hour and a half down the Western Freeway, and relatives right across regional Victoria. If more than one household wants something to hold, the ashes can be divided: a main urn stays in one home while tiny keepsake vessels, a locket or a small photo urn go to the others. Write the pet's name and date on a card for each piece.
Home goodbyes are increasingly common in Ballarat. If you're booking an in-home vet, ask whether they bring a clay kit and whether they'll take two prints, one for each person in the family. Taking your own print the day before, when your pet is calm and comfortable on their own bed, is another option and often gives a cleaner result.
With roughly 113,000 residents, Ballarat is the 3rd-largest of the 5 Victoria communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Ballarat are based about 49 miles away in Geelong, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Geelong (49 miles, a larger centre), Bendigo (60 miles) and Melbourne (63 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Ballarat too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
37,500
Ballarat: dog- or cat-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
113,000 ÷ 2.5 = 45,200 households; × 49% (dog) + 34% (cat) = 37,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
3,100
Estimated dog and cat losses in Ballarat each year
How we calculated this
37,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 3,100 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
34%[3]
34% of Australian households have at least one cat, up from 27% in 2019.
11.18 years[4]
US cats seen at Banfield hospitals have an average life expectancy at birth of 11.18 years.

What local funeral habits mean for a print
Cremation is the norm for people in Australia (about 71%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
The Australia percentage above is from FuneralSmart (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Ballarat, not as a count of pets.
Getting a clean print in Ballarat in any season
Local weather in Ballarat affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
A home kit is the cheapest way to get a print in Ballarat, and it gives you as many copies as you like. Order one early, while your pet is well, because courier delivery to regional areas can take days. If you'd rather a crematorium did it, the median listed price for individually cremating a pet under 5 kg in Australia is around AUD 412[6], and a print is usually a small line on top of that.

Local rules worth knowing in Victoria
Nothing in Victoria restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
In Australia, paw prints are usually part of a cremation package or a small add-on, and RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages come back within 14 days[8]. Summer heat is the main practical issue: take prints indoors with the air conditioning on, keep your pet cool first and dry air-dry clay slowly out of direct sun. In the tropical north, humidity can keep clay soft for days.
The Victoria page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Ballarat's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your paw print plan for Ballarat
- Choose one calm afternoon and do all the pets together, beginning with whichever one is least bothered by handling.
- Label everything before you start: write each name on the reverse of its card, or scratch an initial into the base of each clay disc.
- Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal then wipe each paw clean the moment you're done, so nobody licks ink off a housemate.
- Keep each turn short, a couple of minutes per pet, with a treat after every press.
- Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
- Store the set together and date each one on the reverse, so that years from now none of them has gone astray.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Ballarat's bluestone and gold-rush heritage gives the city a strong sense of history, and some families want a memorial that feels permanent: an engraved stone, a bronze plaque or a well-made urn. Others choose something small and personal, like a pendant or a paw print. If you plan an outdoor piece, pick a material that will handle frost and fog.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Geelong to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Geelong (roughly 49 miles from Ballarat) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Ballarat?
The closest communities we cover are Geelong (about 49 miles), Bendigo (about 60 miles) and Melbourne (about 63 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Ballarat too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why does the Ballarat page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. FuneralSmart (2023) reports about 71%[5] of Australia residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Roughly how many pets die in Ballarat each year?
Our estimate is around 3,100. It comes from Ballarat's population (about 113,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 37,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Ballarat?
Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[9]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
