Paw Print Keepsakes in Victoria: what to know
Many owners in Victoria take their pet's print long before the end, on a calm afternoon while their dog or cat is still a healthy senior. It's gentler, it gives a crisper result and it means the keepsake exists no matter how suddenly things change later. If your pet is still with you, that's the approach we'd suggest first.
Across Victoria, most pet crematories offer a clay or ink paw print, sometimes included in the package and sometimes as a small extra. But many owners don't know to ask until afterwards. The simplest habit is to mention the print on the very first call, whether that's to your vet, an in-home euthanasia service or the crematory.

How we calculated this
The sum of our per-city estimates for the 5 communities in Victoria on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

How Victoria thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
Cremation accounts for about 71%[1] of human deaths in Victoria, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
That Victoria rate is a human statistic published by FuneralSmart (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
A home kit is the cheapest way to get a print in Victoria, and it gives you as many copies as you like. Order one early, while your pet is well, because courier delivery to regional areas can take days. If you'd rather a crematorium did it, the median listed price for individually cremating a pet under 5 kg in Australia is around AUD 412[2], and a print is usually a small line on top of that.
We haven't found published Australian or New Zealand prices for paw prints on their own; most are sold within cremation packages. RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages, for example, start from AUD 250 with the memorial returned within 14 days[3]. In Victoria, ask whether a clay or ink print is part of the package, and if not, what it adds.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, pets up to 5 kg (median) | AUD 412 median[2] | Ask whether a print is included |
| RSPCA Queensland memorial package | from AUD 250[3] | Memorial returned within 14 days |
| Laser-engraved metal urn, Brisbane | A$245[4] | About two weeks to engrave |
| Paw print on its own | No published local price found | US crematory median about $32[5] |

What Victoria allows after your pet dies
If you might move away from Victoria one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Victoria allows, set out below.
In Australia, paw prints are usually part of a cremation package or a small add-on, and RSPCA Queensland's memorial packages come back within 14 days[3]. Summer heat is the main practical issue: take prints indoors with the air conditioning on, keep your pet cool first and dry air-dry clay slowly out of direct sun. In the tropical north, humidity can keep clay soft for days.
- Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
- Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
- Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
- Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.
A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Skip the table. Take the clay or card to your pet instead, wherever they're comfortable, whether that's their bed or a patch of floor.
- Recruit a second person whose only job is calming your pet, stroking and talking, while you handle the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats to keep your pet's attention forward and their head still.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
- Stop after a few tries when it's upsetting your pet. There's always tomorrow, or your vet can lend a hand at the next appointment.
- Try an inkless kit if your pet hates damp paws; there's nothing to wash off afterwards.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Some families bring the print out once a year, on the anniversary or on the day their pet came home, and add something new: a photo, a pressed flower, a note from each person. Over time the box or frame becomes a record of how the family carried the memory. If an anniversary hits harder than expected, you're not alone; in RSPCA research on pet loss, 66.9%[7] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was.

Questions people ask
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Victoria?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Victoria, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
Are there rules about paw prints in Victoria?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Victoria cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
Can my vet in Victoria take a paw print before cremation?
Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.
How many communities do you cover in Victoria?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 5 communities in Victoria, including Melbourne, Geelong and Ballarat. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
Can children help make a paw print?
Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
