Paw Print Keepsakes in Salzburg: what to know
Across Salzburg, most pet crematories offer a clay or ink paw print, sometimes included in the package and sometimes as a small extra. But many owners don't know to ask until afterwards. The simplest habit is to mention the print on the very first call, whether that's to your vet, an in-home euthanasia service or the crematory.
If you're in Salzburg and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
We don't have a reliable figure for how many people are cremated in Salzburg, but pet cremation is available in most places and home burial is common in many. Either way, a paw print has to be taken before anything else happens. Ask your vet or crematory whether they offer one, or take it yourself at home.
Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
In Salzburg, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[1], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[2].
We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[3]. In Salzburg, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[3] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[4] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[2] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[1] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

Landlords, parks and permits in Salzburg
Renters in Salzburg often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Salzburg allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay for something to hold, ink or inkless paper for engraving and jewelry later. Our kit chooser helps you decide.
- Trim the tufts between the pads using round-ended scissors, so the paw rather than the hair leaves the impression.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
- Dry clay slowly indoors for two or three days, turning it, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
Turning a print into something lasting
Some people find that making the print is itself a kind of goodbye. If that's you, it's fine to take several, keep the one that feels right and let children decorate the rest. There's no wrong way to do this, and no deadline for finishing the keepsake once the print is safely made.

Questions people ask
Is it better to use a local maker in Salzburg or order online?
Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.
How many communities do you cover in Salzburg?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 1 communities in Salzburg, including Salzburg. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
What do other owners in Salzburg choose for a paw print keepsake?
We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
Can children help make a paw print?
Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Salzburg?
Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Salzburg, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
