Arranging a paw print around Calgary
The Rockies are about an hour's drive west, and the Bow River runs through the city, so many Calgarians picture mountains and water when they think about a memorial. Some choose a biodegradable urn or a quiet scattering, others a photo from a favourite spot or a small pendant. Scattering in national or provincial parks and public places has rules, so check before you go.
Many Calgary families plant a tree or shrub in the yard as a memorial, but the short growing season and frozen winters mean timing matters: late spring after the last frost is the safest window, and hardy species suited to Alberta's climate last longest. Until then, ashes can wait indoors in an urn or keepsake. A stone or metal marker handles the freeze-thaw cycles better than wood.
If your pet dies at an emergency or specialty hospital in Calgary, aftercare is usually arranged through that hospital's own crematory contract, which may not be the one your regular vet uses. Staff there can often take a quick clay or ink print, but at 3 am it may not happen unless you ask. Say clearly that you want one, and if the answer is uncertain, ask the crematory to take it at intake instead.

In Canada, about 81.1%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.
We take the Canada rate from CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Calgary, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Clay, ink and the local climate
Local weather in Calgary affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.
Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
Many paw print jewelers that owners in Calgary find online are based in the US and price in US dollars. A custom sterling silver print charm from one US maker costs $143 plus a chain[4]. Once you convert the currency and add shipping, any duties and GST or HST, the total can be noticeably higher. What the law in Alberta does and doesn't cover
Some towns and councils in Alberta run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
City of Calgary publishes Calgary's official guidance. Note that it deals with public collection, not with booking a private cremation.
In Canada, paw prints are usually arranged through your vet or the pet crematory at the same time as cremation, and some small studios make ceramic keepsakes from them. Cold winters are the main practical hurdle: warm clay in your hands, keep plaster work indoors and don't post a print that isn't fully dry. In Quebec, ask for an empreinte de patte.

How to make sure a print is taken in time
- If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
- Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
- If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
- Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number from the front desk, written down.
- If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
- Leave the urn and the other extras for later. The print is the only decision that can't wait.
Remembering your pet through their print
With family often spread between Calgary, other provinces and the oil and gas towns further north, many households want a keepsake for more than one person. Small matching urns, pieces of cremation jewellery, paw print casts or a clipping of fur or feathers can be prepared together. Is cremation common in Canada?
For people, yes: about 81.1%[1] of Canada deaths end in cremation, according to CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Calgary follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Can I get my dog's nose print?
Yes. Dab a small amount of pet-safe ink onto the nose with a soft sponge, or use an inkless wipe, then press a folded card gently against the nose from the front. It usually takes a few tries. The ridges on a dog's nose make a striking engraving on a pendant or an urn, and many providers take a nose print alongside the paw.
How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Calgary?
Local published prices for prints are scarce outside the US; most vets and crematories include them in a package or quote on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[6] and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[7]. Ask for a written local price.
Can my pet's paw print be turned into a tattoo?
Yes, and it's a popular choice. A tattoo artist will want a clear, high-contrast flat print, so an ink or inkless print works better than clay. Scan it at a high resolution and bring the file to your consultation. Many people have the print tattooed at actual size, sometimes with the pet's name or a nose print alongside.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[8] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
