Who takes paw prints in Edmonton
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many Edmontonians think of the river valley, a lake cabin, or the mountains a few hours west. Public parks are shared spaces with their own rules, so check first and choose a quiet time. Holding back a spoonful of ashes in a small urn, a pendant or a keepsake box means something stays with you, whatever you decide about the rest.
Many Edmonton families keep a pet's ashes in an urn through the winter and decide on a lasting memorial once the snow melts. Others choose a pendant holding a trace of ashes, a framed paw or nose print, or a memorial stone to place in the garden come May. Ask for prints or fur clippings at the first call, since they must be taken before your pet leaves home.
If your pet dies at an emergency or specialty hospital in Edmonton, aftercare is usually arranged through that hospital's own crematory contract, which may not be the one your regular vet uses. Staff there can often take a quick clay or ink print, but at 3 am it may not happen unless you ask. Say clearly that you want one, and if the answer is uncertain, ask the crematory to take it at intake instead.
Edmonton's population is around 1,010,000, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Alberta communities we cover.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Canada
Cremation is the everyday choice in Canada: about 81.1%[1] of people who die there are cremated. Pet aftercare tends to follow the same habits, which means most pets here end up as a small box of ashes. Ashes don't show a paw, a nose or the shape of a toe. That's a big part of why prints matter so much in high-cremation places, and why local crematories are so used to being asked for one.
For the Canada figure we rely on CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Edmonton rather than as pet data.
Seasons in Edmonton and a print that lasts
Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Edmonton, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
A print is a small cost next to the cremation. On Vancouver Island, one crematorium lists private cremation from CAD 195 for pets up to 20 lb, before GST[4]. US crematory price lists put the median paw-print add-on at about $32[2], and Canadian prices tend to follow a similar pattern in Canadian dollars. Ask providers in Edmonton whether a print is already bundled in.

What the law in Alberta does and doesn't cover
Nothing in Alberta restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.
In Canada, paw prints are usually arranged through your vet or the pet crematory at the same time as cremation, and some small studios make ceramic keepsakes from them. Cold winters are the main practical hurdle: warm clay in your hands, keep plaster work indoors and don't post a print that isn't fully dry. In Quebec, ask for an empreinte de patte.
The Alberta page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Edmonton's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
Your paw print plan for Edmonton
- Decide who will take the print: you at home, your vet, or the crematory at intake. The earlier in the process, the more control you have.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
- Plan the finishing later. There's no rush to turn a print into jewelry or art; do it when you're ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Edmonton's growing season is short, so families who want to plant a tree with a bio urn usually wait until late May, after the last frost, and choose a hardy species such as a mountain ash, a spruce or a Saskatoon berry bush. A memorial stone can be set at the same time. If you might move, hold back a little of the ashes in a keepsake before planting.

Questions people ask
Why does the Edmonton page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030) reports about 81.1%[1] of Canada residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?
Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
Can I post a clay paw print in winter?
Yes, but wrap it well. A fully dried and sealed clay print is sturdy, but freezing temperatures in a delivery van can crack one that's still slightly damp. Make sure it's completely dry, wrap it in bubble wrap inside a rigid box and avoid shipping over a weekend. Better still, send a scan if the maker accepts one.
How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Edmonton?
Local published prices for prints are scarce outside the US; most vets and crematories include them in a package or quote on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[6] and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[7]. Ask for a written local price.
