Paw Print Keepsakes in Alberta: what to know

Once a print is safely made, Alberta offers plenty of ways to finish it: local engravers, jewelers, ceramic studios and tattoo artists, plus online makers who work from a scan. There's no rush. Keep the original at home, photograph it flat in daylight and decide what you'd like when you're ready.

Two free tools help owners across Alberta plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Cremation is the norm for people in Alberta (about 81.1%[1] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

The cremation figure for Alberta comes from CANA Industry Statistical Information (2030). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

What owners in Alberta typically pay for a print

A print is a small cost next to the cremation. On Vancouver Island, one crematorium lists private cremation from CAD 195 for pets up to 20 lb, before GST[2]. US crematory price lists put the median paw-print add-on at about $32[3], and Canadian prices tend to follow a similar pattern in Canadian dollars. Ask providers in Alberta whether a print is already bundled in.

Canadian paw print prices are mostly published by small studios and crematories. One Canadian studio charges from CA$155 for a handmade ceramic paw-print keepsake and asks buyers to allow 3 to 4 weeks[4]. A clinic or crematory clay print taken before cremation is usually much cheaper, so ask what's included when you book in Alberta.

What the law in Alberta does and doesn't cover

Rules in Alberta say a good deal about where a pet can be buried and very little about how a crematory keeps track of each animal. That's one more reason to take your own print: made before collection, it's a record you created yourself. Ask your provider how pets are tagged, and read the burial and scattering notes below for the rest.

In Canada, paw prints are usually arranged through your vet or the pet crematory at the same time as cremation, and some small studios make ceramic keepsakes from them. Cold winters are the main practical hurdle: warm clay in your hands, keep plaster work indoors and don't post a print that isn't fully dry. In Quebec, ask for an empreinte de patte.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

How to make sure a print is taken in time

  1. Skip the table. Bring the clay or card to wherever your pet likes to lie, on the floor or on their own bed.
  2. Recruit a second person whose only job is calming your pet, stroking and talking, while you handle the paw.
  3. Use a lick mat or a few treats so your pet stays focused ahead and doesn't keep turning around.
  4. Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
  5. Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
  6. Try an inkless kit if your pet hates damp paws; there's nothing to wash off afterwards.

Turning a print into something lasting

Some people find that making the print is itself a kind of goodbye. If that's you, it's fine to take several, keep the one that feels right and let children decorate the rest. There's no wrong way to do this, and no deadline for finishing the keepsake once the print is safely made.

Questions people ask

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Alberta, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

Can my vet in Alberta take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

How many communities do you cover in Alberta?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 2 communities in Alberta, including Calgary and Edmonton. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Alberta say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

Are there rules about paw prints in Alberta?

No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Alberta cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
