Paw Print Keepsakes in Shanghai: what to know

Two free tools help owners across Shanghai plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

Paw prints in Shanghai aren't only for dogs and cats. Horse owners keep hoof prints pressed into clay slabs, bird owners capture tiny feet in soft clay, and rabbit owners find that clay shows the long, furry shape of the hind foot better than ink. Each needs a slightly different approach, and each city page covers the basics.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

Around 50%[1] of people in Shanghai are cremated, a middle-of-the-road rate that means local traditions vary from family to family. Some households want a grave to visit, others want ashes at home. A paw print works with both. It can sit on a shelf, be set into a garden stone above a grave or be engraved onto an urn.

The cremation figure for Shanghai comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (2019). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

In Shanghai, many pet funeral companies offer a farewell ceremony, individual cremation and an urn as one price. If a paw print isn't listed, ask whether they can take one before cremation. For comparison, a Singapore provider lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a cat under 5 kg[2], and a US crematory network charges $49 for ink paw prints[3].

In Japan, by our estimate about 85% of owners who state a preference want an individual pet funeral rather than a joint one[4], and packages there often include keepsake options. Even communal cremation of a small pet at one Tokyo memorial park costs JPY 14,300[5]. Wherever you are in Asia, check with providers in Shanghai that a paw print is listed among the package contents, and ask to see an example.

What Shanghai allows after your pet dies

If you might move away from Shanghai one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Shanghai allows, set out below.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
  2. Say exactly what you want: ink, clay, a nose print, or every one of them, plus the number of copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number on paper from reception before you leave.
  5. If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.

Turning a print into something lasting

A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

If Shanghai is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Can my vet in Shanghai take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

What do other owners in Shanghai choose for a paw print keepsake?

We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Shanghai say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Shanghai, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

How much does a paw print cost in Shanghai?

Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[3], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[9]. Ask local providers for a written price.
