Paw Print Keepsakes in Normandy: what to know
If you're in Normandy and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.
Once a print is safely made, Normandy offers plenty of ways to finish it: local engravers, jewelers, ceramic studios and tattoo artists, plus online makers who work from a scan. There's no rush. Keep the original at home, photograph it flat in daylight and decide what you'd like when you're ready.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first
In Normandy, only about 44.91%[1] of people are cremated, and many families still prefer a grave. A paw print can become part of that grave: pressed into a concrete stepping stone, cast in resin and set into a headstone, or kept at home while your pet rests in the garden. Take the print before burial, while the paw is still easy to position.
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) publishes the Normandy rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Normandy the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[2], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.
We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[3]. In Normandy, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[3] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[4] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[5] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[6] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

Rules in Normandy that touch on keepsakes
Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Normandy, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.
In France, a crématorium animalier can often take an empreinte de patte before cremation, and some vets keep clay kits at the clinic. Ask when you arrange collection, and ask whether the print comes back with the ashes or separately. In the hot south, dry air-dry clay slowly indoors to stop the toes cracking.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your pet dies while you're away from home, call the kennel, sitter or local vet and ask them to keep your pet cool and take a paw print before anything else happens.
- Ask them to photograph the print and send it to you, so you know it's clear.
- Decide whether to bring your pet home or arrange cremation where they are; the print can travel with either choice.
- Ask for ink rather than clay if the print will be posted to you. A flat card survives the mail far better than damp clay.
- If you're driving home with your pet, keep them cool and take your own print when you arrive, before burial or collection.
- Keep names, numbers and receipts for everyone involved, so everything can be matched up later.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

Questions people ask
Can my vet in Normandy take a paw print before cremation?
Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.
How much does a paw print cost in Normandy?
Published prices for prints alone are scarce, because most are sold within a cremation package or quoted on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[6], and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[5]. Ask local providers for a written price.
Can children help make a paw print?
Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Normandy?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
Are there rules about paw prints in Normandy?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Normandy cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
How many communities do you cover in Normandy?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 1 communities in Normandy, including Le Havre. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
