Paw Print Keepsakes in Berlin: what to know

If you're in Berlin and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

Two free tools help owners across Berlin plan a print. The paw print kit chooser matches clay, ink, inkless and casting kits to your pet's size, coat and temperament, and the memorial budget planner shows what a print costs next to framing, engraving or jewelry. Use them before you call a provider, so you know what to ask for.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Berlin

In Berlin, about 76.0%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Berlin rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Where the money goes: the print, then the finishing

We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Berlin the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[2], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

We haven't found reliable published prices for paw prints in Europe; most pet crematoria include them in a package or quote on request. For context, individual cremation in Germany is listed at about €165 to €375[3]. In Berlin, ask your vet or the crematorium for a written price that shows the print, the urn and any engraving separately.

Burial, scattering and prints in Berlin

Burial rules in many places, including Berlin, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: a clay disc, an ink print or both. If you might want jewelry later, ask for an ink or inkless print as well.
  3. Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
  5. Check how it comes back: in your hands the same day, or alongside the ashes later, and what name goes on it.
  6. Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

A garden stone with your pet's paw pressed into it is a lovely outdoor memorial, especially where they used to lie in the sun. Make it from the clay print as a template, or ask a local stonemason to engrave the scanned image. Our guide to displaying prints and engraved tags has more ideas.

Questions people ask

Are there rules about paw prints in Berlin?

No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Berlin cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.

Can my vet in Berlin take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Berlin, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

How many communities do you cover in Berlin?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 1 communities in Berlin, including Berlin. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Berlin say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
