Paw Print Keepsakes in Schleswig-Holstein: what to know
Not every goodbye in Schleswig-Holstein is planned. Accidents, sudden illness and quiet deaths overnight happen, and many owners assume the chance for a print has passed. Usually it hasn't. As long as your pet hasn't yet been cremated or buried, a vet, a crematory or you yourself can still take a print, even a day or two later. Say so on the first phone call.
Home euthanasia has become far more common across Schleswig-Holstein, and it has made paw prints easier. When the vet comes to you, the goodbye happens on your pet's own bed, with no waiting room and no rush to leave. Many home-visit vets carry a clay kit. Even if they don't, you can take your own print before they arrive, in a room your pet knows.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Cremation accounts for about 76.0%[1] of human deaths in Schleswig-Holstein, so many households already have a shelf or cabinet where family ashes and photos sit. A pet's print tends to join that shelf. That's worth knowing before you choose a format: a clay disc needs a small stand, an ink print suits a frame the same size as your photos, and a print engraved straight onto the urn saves space altogether.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Schleswig-Holstein rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Paw print costs around Schleswig-Holstein, line by line
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[2] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[3]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Schleswig-Holstein, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Schleswig-Holstein what's included before you choose.
| Item | Published price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Individual cremation, Germany | €165 to €375[5] | Ask whether a Pfotenabdruck is included |
| Individual cremation, Ireland (up to 10 kg) | €250[4] | Ask about clay or ink prints |
| Resin paw cast, UK (small dog) | from £120[6] | For comparison |
| Clay paw print, US crematory network | $76[7] | For comparison |
| Paw print on its own in Europe | No published price found | Ask for a written quote |

Local rules worth knowing in Schleswig-Holstein
You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Schleswig-Holstein are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.
In Germany, ask your vet or Tierkrematorium for a Pfotenabdruck, either in clay or ink, before cremation. Many pet crematoria also offer plaster casts, a Gipsabdruck, as a 3D keepsake. If you're planning a home burial where allowed, you'll have time to take the print yourself first. Keep plaster indoors in winter so it sets properly.
In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
If you'd like ashes and the print together without wearing them, an ashes-in-glass piece needs only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[9] of ashes, and the paw can be engraved on its base or a matching frame. Use our jewelry ash capacity guide to see how far your pet's ashes will go, and our ashes sharing planner if several people want a piece.

Questions people ask
Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Schleswig-Holstein?
Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
What do other owners in Schleswig-Holstein choose for a paw print keepsake?
We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.
How many communities do you cover in Schleswig-Holstein?
We have local paw print keepsake guides for 1 communities in Schleswig-Holstein, including Kiel. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Schleswig-Holstein?
Across Schleswig-Holstein, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.
Is it better to use a local maker in Schleswig-Holstein or order online?
Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.
Can children help make a paw print?
Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.
