Arranging a paw print around Galway
Stone walls and stone crosses are everywhere in the west of Ireland, and some Galway families like a memorial with the same feel: a piece of Connemara stone or limestone engraved with a name, set into the garden. Others prefer a tree or a hardy shrub that can take the wind off the bay. Choose something that will stand up to year-round rain.
Ireland still buries most of its dead, with cremation at around a quarter, so keeping ashes at home can feel new to some Galway families. For a pet, many people go ahead anyway and find it comforting: a small urn on the dresser, a framed paw print, or a pendant carrying a pinch of ashes. There is no hurry, and sealed ashes keep safely.
There may be no ceramic studio or engraver in Galway, but that matters less than it used to. Most jewelry, engraving and print-art makers work from a photo or scan of the print, sent by email, and post the finished piece back. Photograph your print flat in daylight, keep the original safe at home and shop around online without sending anything irreplaceable.
Galway's population is around 80,000.
For a second opinion on price, Cork (98 miles, a larger centre) and Dublin (116 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Galway routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Ireland
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Ireland, where about 26.56%[1] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.
For the Ireland figure we rely on Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). Read it as a picture of local custom around death and remembrance in Galway rather than as pet data.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

What owners in Galway typically pay for a print
We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Galway the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

What Connacht allows after your pet dies
Some towns and councils in Connacht run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
In Ireland, pet crematoria commonly offer paw prints within their individual cremation packages, and your vet can usually arrange one before collection. The damp climate means air-dry clay can take several days to harden fully, so dry it indoors on a rack and seal it only once it's pale and light all through.
Getting a paw print in Galway, step by step
- If your pet is still with you, don't wait. Take a print on a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, when your pet is relaxed. A print from a living pet is usually the clearest.
- Choose your method. Clay if you want something to hold; ink or an inkless sheet if jewelry or engraving might come later. The kit chooser can settle it.
- Trim the tufts between the pads with blunt-tipped scissors so the pads, not the fur, make the shape.
- Hold the leg, not the paw, push down evenly in one motion, and raise it again without sliding. Make a few attempts and choose the sharpest one.
- Dry clay slowly indoors for two or three days, turning it, then seal it with a matte acrylic sealer.
- Photograph or scan the print flat in daylight. Makers can work from that image, so the original stays at home.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Many Galway families have relatives in Dublin, Britain, America or Australia, and a memorial sometimes needs to cross the sea. Splitting the ashes lets emigrant sons and daughters hold part of the memory: the main urn stays on the dresser at home, and small sealed vessels travel. For flights, pack them in hand luggage with a short note explaining what they are, as security may ask.

Questions people ask
How do Ireland attitudes to cremation compare?
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) puts the Ireland human cremation rate at about 26.56%[1]. We show it on the Galway page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Galway?
The closest communities we cover are Cork (about 98 miles) and Dublin (about 116 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Galway too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Can I take the print myself before the vet or crematory arrives?
Absolutely, and many people prefer to. Have the clay warmed or the card taped down before the appointment, choose a quiet room and take a few prints while your pet is calm. If collection is happening after a home euthanasia, the team will usually wait a few minutes while you take one afterwards too. Just let them know.
Should I take a paw print while my senior pet is still alive?
If you can, yes. A relaxed living pet usually gives the clearest print, and you can take as many as you like without pressure. It can also give anticipatory grief something useful to do; in an RSPCA survey, 75.4%[5] of bereaved owners said they grieved before their pet died. Choose a calm, good day and keep the session short.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
Who else can take a paw print if my vet in Galway doesn't?
Several people can. The crematory that serves Galway normally makes one when your pet arrives. A mobile or home-visit vet may carry a kit. A groomer who knows your pet can tidy the paw fur and help you take one on a good day. And you can do it yourself with air-dry clay and a pet-safe ink pad from a craft store. What matters is that it happens before cremation or burial.
