Paw Print Keepsakes in Ireland: what to know

Because a paw print must be taken before cremation or burial, it's the one keepsake in Ireland that depends on planning rather than shopping. Jewelry, engraving and art can all be ordered later from a scan. The print itself can't be remade, so it's the first thing to arrange.

In Ireland, as elsewhere, families increasingly keep a print even when they choose communal cremation or a simple burial. It's affordable, and it works whether or not ashes come home. If cost is a worry, start there: making one at home is cheap, and you can decide on finishing it, or not, much later.

We cover 3 communities in Ireland, from Dublin, Cork and Galway.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Ireland

Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Ireland, where about 26.56%[1] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.

We take the Ireland percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

In Ireland, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[2], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[3].

We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Ireland the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

Local rules worth knowing in Ireland

Renters in Ireland often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Ireland allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.

In Ireland, pet crematoria commonly offer paw prints within their individual cremation packages, and your vet can usually arrange one before collection. The damp climate means air-dry clay can take several days to harden fully, so dry it indoors on a rack and seal it only once it's pale and light all through.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Decide who will take the print: you at home, your vet, or the crematory at intake. The earlier in the process, the more control you have.
  2. Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
  3. Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
  4. Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
  5. Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
  6. If you'd like help, send us a few details and we'll reply by email with options.

Ways families in Ireland keep a print close

Frames are the simplest option and often the most loved. An ink print on acid-free card, behind UV-filtering glass and out of direct sun, will stay crisp for decades. Add a photo and an engraved tag with your pet's name, and you have a small memorial that fits on any wall.

Next: see what each choice includes on services, run your own numbers in the tools, check the poll results, or pick another area from all locations.

Questions people ask

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

Can my vet in Ireland take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Ireland say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Ireland, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

What do other owners in Ireland choose for a paw print keepsake?

We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Ireland?

Across Ireland, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.
