Getting a paw print in Cork: the local picture
Cork Harbour, the Lee Fields along the river, and the coast of West Cork out toward Kinsale and beyond are places many families feel a deep bond with, and some want to remember a pet there. Beaches, harbors and public parks can have rules on scattering, so check first. A biodegradable urn planted with a native tree, such as a rowan, hawthorn or birch, in your own garden keeps a memorial close.
Irish families have strong traditions of remembering the dead, including visiting and tending graves, and some Cork families bring that same care to a pet's memorial. An engraved stone in the garden, a plaque by the back door or a small urn with a photo gives you a place to leave flowers or light a candle. Choose stone or slate that can take the rain, and set it somewhere sheltered from the wind.
Plenty of pets in Cork came from a rescue, a foster home or a breeder who still asks after them, and those people often treasure a copy of the print too. If your pet has a story like that, take one extra ink print, or have a scan made, and send it with a short note. Some rescue groups keep a memory wall of prints and photos, and it can be a comfort to know your pet's paw hangs there.
With roughly 210,000 residents, Cork is one of the Munster communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Galway (98 miles) and Dublin (137 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Cork routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

How Ireland thinks about cremation, and why prints matter
With about 26.56%[1] of people in Ireland cremated, traditions here lean toward burial, and that often extends to pets. Whatever you choose, a print is the part you can do yourself, at home, with ordinary clay and a towel. It doesn't depend on local services, and it's the one keepsake that has to be made before anything else happens.

Getting a clean print in Cork in any season
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Cork what's included before you choose.

Local rules worth knowing in Munster
Burial rules in many places, including Munster, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
In Ireland, pet crematoria commonly offer paw prints within their individual cremation packages, and your vet can usually arrange one before collection. The damp climate means air-dry clay can take several days to harden fully, so dry it indoors on a rack and seal it only once it's pale and light all through.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Take a breath. When a pet dies at home, the first few hours usually leave enough time to make a print. Settle them on a towel somewhere cool.
- Gather what you need: clay warmed in your hands, or card taped to a board with a pet-safe ink pad, plus a damp cloth.
- If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Ease it onto the pads with light pressure; don't try to push the foot down.
- Take a nose print too if you'd like one, with a light touch of ink or an inkless wipe.
- Call your vet or crematory afterwards, and let them know a print has already been made so they can skip that step.
- Let the print dry indoors, out of direct sun and well clear of radiators, before framing it or mailing it.
From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone
Space is limited in many Cork terraces and flats, so small memorials often suit: a compact urn on the mantelpiece, a framed paw print, or cremation jewelry holding a little of the ashes. Irish families are often spread around the world, and a small keepsake can be posted or carried to a son or daughter in London, Sydney or Boston. Ask for the ashes to be divided when you order if that's your plan.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cork?
Usually yes. Galway is about 98 miles away and Dublin is about 137 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Cork page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Statistics 2024 - Eire (2024) reports about 26.56%[1] of Ireland residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?
It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?
Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.
How long before the print and ashes come back in Cork?
By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[5], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Cork which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.
