Getting a paw print in Naples: the local picture
Neapolitan homes are often full of religious images and family photos, and a pet's memorial can join them naturally: a small urn on a shelf, a memorial stone on a balcony among the potted lemons and geraniums, or a keepsake with a lock of fur. Candles lit on anniversaries, or on All Souls' Day in November, fit the local habit of keeping loved ones present in daily life.
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, many Neapolitans think of the bay, with Vesuvius behind. Choose a calm day and a place away from busy beaches, ferry routes and harbours. A bio urn planted in a family garden or on a relative's land in the Campanian countryside is another option. Keeping a small portion in a keepsake or pendant first means you can still hold on to something.
Because Naples has several pet crematories within reach, you can actually compare what their prints look like. Some press a thick clay disc and stamp the name; others take a flat ink print on card, or a silver-clay impression that is fired into metal. Ask each one to email a photo of a recent example. A crisp outline with visible pad shapes is what you want. A blurry round blob suggests the print is done in a hurry.
Naples's population is around 967,000.
Our pages for Rome (117 miles, a larger centre) and Bari (137 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Naples as well.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
In Italy, only about 38.16%[1] of people are cremated, and many families still prefer a grave. A paw print can become part of that grave: pressed into a concrete stepping stone, cast in resin and set into a headstone, or kept at home while your pet rests in the garden. Take the print before burial, while the paw is still easy to position.
The Italy percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Naples, not as a count of pets.
Seasons in Naples and a print that lasts
Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Naples, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

What owners in Naples typically pay for a print
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Naples what's included before you choose.

Rules in Campania that touch on keepsakes
Some towns and councils in Campania run a collection service for pets who die at home, usually without returning any ashes. If that's the route you take, a print will be the only keepsake you have, so take it before you call. The notes below cover the other options: home burial, pet cemeteries and scattering ashes.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- For a horse, book the farrier to trim and clean the hoof first. Pick out the sole and dry it well.
- Press the hoof into a thick slab of clay resting on a board, or coat the sole in non-toxic paint and set it down on stiff card. Ask a helper to keep the leg still while you do it.
- Keep the last shoe and a length of tail or mane hair, which many horse owners have braided or set into resin.
- For a bird or a very small pet, choose the softest clay or an inkless sheet, and barely press at all. Clay picks up tiny toes best.
- For a fluffy cat or rabbit, go inkless so nothing ends up on fur they'll wash later; for rabbits especially, clay captures the long, narrow foot well.
- Dry and store every print indoors, and photograph it so a maker can work from the image.
Ways families in Naples keep a print close
Naples has a famously intimate relationship with its dead, visible in the small shrines and votive lamps on street corners, and many families keep memorials close. For a pet that might mean a small urn beside a photo, a candle, a pendant holding a trace of ashes, or a framed paw print. Whatever you choose, ask for prints or fur clippings at the first contact, before your pet leaves home.

Questions people ask
Why does the Naples page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Naples?
Usually yes. Rome is about 117 miles away and Bari is about 137 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
How do I get my pet's paw print in Naples?
You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.
How much does a paw print keepsake cost in Naples?
Local published prices for prints are scarce outside the US; most vets and crematories include them in a package or quote on request. As a benchmark, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[6] and a UK studio casts a small dog's paw in resin from about £120[7]. Ask for a written local price.
