Getting your pet's paw print in Palermo

Palermo, Sicily

How owners in Palermo get a paw print

Palermo apartments suit compact memorials, and Sicily's ceramic tradition, from Caltagirone to Santo Stefano di Camastra, offers plenty of inspiration. A painted tile with your pet's name, a small hand-decorated urn, a pendant holding a trace of ash or an engraved stone for a balcony all fit local homes. Confirm how much ash to expect before ordering a vessel so it fits.

In Sicily, the Festa dei Morti on 2 November is a day when families remember those who have died, and children traditionally receive gifts said to come from departed relatives. Some families now include pets in that remembrance, placing a candle beside an urn, a framed photograph, a keepsake box or a small memorial stone. A sugar doll or a plate of marzipan fruit on the table is a very Palermitan touch.

If your pet dies at an emergency or specialty hospital in Palermo, aftercare is usually arranged through that hospital's own crematory contract, which may not be the one your regular vet uses. Staff there can often take a quick clay or ink print, but at 3 am it may not happen unless you ask. Say clearly that you want one, and if the answer is uncertain, ask the crematory to take it at intake instead.

Palermo is home to about 676,000 people, the largest of the 2 Sicily communities we cover.

Families in Palermo often end up using a provider from Catania (103 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

~$32[2]

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Italy

Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Italy, where about 38.16%[1] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.

That Italy rate is a human one, published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). We quote it for Palermo only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

Clay, ink and the local climate

Whatever the weather outside, think about where the finished print will live. A sunny windowsill fades ink, a bathroom's steam softens clay, and an attic or garage swings between heat and cold. A bookshelf in a living room, away from direct light, is the safest home. If you'd like something outdoors in Palermo, have a copy engraved in stone or metal and keep the original inside.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Palermo

Paw print costs around Palermo, line by line

Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[4] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[5]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Palermo, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Sicily: Sicily costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Landlords, parks and permits in Sicily

You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in Sicily are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.

How to make sure a print is taken in time

  1. Tell your child what's happening in plain words, and ask whether they'd like to help with the print. Our guide to print-making with children suggests roles for different ages.
  2. Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
  3. Let them press a hand or fingerprint next to the paw, if they'd like to.
  4. If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
  5. Make a copy for your child's room, and tuck the original away out of harm's way.
  6. Come back to it later. One child wants it framed the same week; another won't look at it for months.

Ways families in Palermo keep a print close

Monte Pellegrino, the bay at Mondello and the Parco della Favorita are places many Palermo families shared with their pets. Italian rules on dispersing ashes are strict and vary by region and comune, so ask at the comune before planning anything outdoors. Many Palermo owners instead bury a biodegradable urn under a lemon tree or bougainvillea in a terracotta pot, or set a small marble plaque in a family garden.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Palermo follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How do I get my pet's paw print in Palermo?

You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.

My pet died at night in Palermo. Is it too late for a print?

No. If your pet is at home, keep them cool on a towel and take the print yourself when you feel ready, within the first few hours if you can. If your pet is at an emergency hospital, ask the staff to take one, or tell the crematory in the morning that you want a print before cremation. You don't have to decide anything else that night.

How long before the print and ashes come back in Palermo?

By our estimate, most pet crematories return ashes within about 3 to 14 days[7], and a print taken at intake usually travels with them. A print taken by your vet may come back sooner, handed to you on the day or posted separately. Ask providers in Palermo which applies, and request a snapshot of the print if you'll be waiting a week or more; it's reassuring to know it came out clear.

Can a paw print be taken after my pet has died?

Yes. A print can usually be taken in the first hours after death at home, and later by a vet or crematory before cremation. If the leg has stiffened, press the clay gently onto the paw rather than forcing the paw down. A print from a relaxed, living pet tends to be crisper, which is why many owners take one while their pet is still a healthy senior.

Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Palermo?

Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[8]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
