Paw Print Keepsakes in Hiroshima: what to know

Rural parts of Hiroshima often mean a pet travels some distance to be cremated. That makes the local vet, or your own kitchen table, the right place for a print. Crematories can take one at intake as a backup, but a print you took yourself is one you've already checked.

If you're in Hiroshima and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

How Hiroshima thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

Cremation is the norm for people in Hiroshima (about 99.97%[1] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.

That Hiroshima rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing

Pet funeral providers across Asia usually sell packages, and some include a paw print, a fur clipping or a small keepsake. We haven't found reliable local prices for prints on their own. For context, a Tokyo memorial park charges JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[2]. Ask providers in Hiroshima exactly what their package covers.

In Hiroshima, many pet funeral companies offer a farewell ceremony, individual cremation and an urn as one price. If a paw print isn't listed, ask whether they can take one before cremation. For comparison, a Singapore provider lists private cremation at SGD 280 for a cat under 5 kg[3], and a US crematory network charges $49 for ink paw prints[4].

Burial, scattering and prints in Hiroshima

Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for Hiroshima, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Tell your child what's happening in plain words, and ask whether they'd like to help with the print. Our guide to print-making with children suggests roles for different ages.
  2. Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
  3. Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
  4. If the print is taken after death, let an adult or the vet do it, and show your child the finished keepsake.
  5. Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
  6. Come back to it later. Some children want the print framed straight away; others return to it months on.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Nose prints, whisker collections and fur clippings sit beautifully alongside a paw print. A shadow box can hold all of them together with a collar tag. If you'd rather wear the memory, many jewelers can combine a paw print on one side and a nose print on the other.

Questions people ask

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Hiroshima, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Hiroshima?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.

Is it better to use a local maker in Hiroshima or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Hiroshima say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Hiroshima?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
