Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Hiroshima
Hiroshima has a deep tradition of remembrance, visible in the lanterns floated on the river each August and in the paper cranes left in the city's memorial spaces. Some families borrow from these customs for their pets, folding cranes, lighting a lantern or placing flowers by the urn on an anniversary. Such gestures make a memorial personal without needing anything elaborate.
In Hiroshima homes, a pet's urn often sits on a small shelf or next to the family altar, where it may stay until the family feels ready to decide on anything more permanent. Compact ceramic urns, wooden memorial boxes and photo frames are popular, and many families divide the bones between an urn at home and a temple's shared memorial. Ask for any paw print or fur clipping before the cremation.
In a city the size of Hiroshima, the question is rarely whether someone can take a paw print. Most general practices, emergency hospitals, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories here offer one. The risk is the opposite: a busy clinic handling several goodbyes a day can simply forget. If you want a print, say so when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether the original will come back with the ashes or separately.
Hiroshima's population is around 1,194,000.

Cremation habits in Japan and the print window
With about 99.97%[1] of people in Japan cremated, most local families already know the rhythm of a cremation: collection, a few days' wait, then the ashes come home. A print fits neatly into the start of that process, before collection. Once your pet is cremated, the chance is gone, so the first phone call is the right moment to mention it.
The Japan percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Hiroshima, not as a count of pets.
Weather in Hiroshima and your pet's print
In warm weather, the first hours after a pet dies at home matter for comfort and for the print. Keep your pet in the coolest room, on a towel, and take the print early, before the body stiffens. In cold weather, a pet kept in a chilled room will have firm pads, so press the clay gently onto the paw instead.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Hiroshima
Pet funeral providers across Asia usually sell packages, and some include a paw print, a fur clipping or a small keepsake. We haven't found reliable local prices for prints on their own. For context, a Tokyo memorial park charges JPY 22,000 for individual cremation of a pet under 5 kg[4]. Ask providers in Hiroshima exactly what their package covers.

Rules in Japan that touch on keepsakes
Renters in Japan often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Japan allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
In Japan, pet funeral companies often sell packages with a short ceremony, cremation and an urn, and some include a paw print or fur keepsake. Ask for a nikukyu (paw pad) print before cremation if it isn't listed. During the humid rainy season in early summer, air-dry clay can take much longer to harden, so dry it indoors with a dehumidifier or air conditioning.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, and ask whether they'd like to help with the print. Our guide to print-making with children suggests roles for different ages.
- Give them a real job: they can roll the clay, pick the card, or write the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint next to the paw, if they'd like to.
- If the print is taken after death, let an adult or the vet do it, and show your child the finished keepsake.
- Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
- Come back to it later. One child wants it framed the same week; another won't look at it for months.
Remembering your pet through their print
If you are thinking of scattering ashes, the Seto Inland Sea coast and the islands off Hiroshima are beautiful, but they are also working waters, with oyster rafts, ferries and busy shores. A tree or bio urn in a family garden, or a portion kept in jewellery, are gentler alternatives. Keeping a small keepsake before any scattering avoids regret later, especially if you might one day move away from the Inland Sea.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Japan?
For people, yes: about 99.97%[1] of Japan deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hiroshima follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
Should I use a local jeweler or an online maker for a paw print pendant?
Both work. A local jeweler or engraver in Hiroshima lets you see samples and hand over the print in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original never has to leave your home. Ask either one for a proof before they start, and check how long it will take: a custom silver print charm takes about two weeks at one US maker[6].
Is a paw print included when a vet comes to our home in Hiroshima?
Often, but not always. Many home-visit vets bring a clay kit and include one print in their fee; others charge for it or leave it to the crematory. Ask when you book, and check whether a flat ink copy is possible as well. Home goodbyes are no longer unusual: in the Dog Aging Project, 22.8% of dogs who were euthanized died at home[7]. You can also take your own print before the vet arrives.
Can I get a print of my bird's feet?
Yes, with care. Birds are light and their toes are delicate, so use very soft clay and the gentlest pressure, or an inkless kit with treated paper. Ink is best avoided because birds preen and may swallow it. An avian vet can help if your bird is nervous. The result is a lovely, delicate impression of the toes and scales.
Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?
Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Hiroshima.
