If cost is a worry, start there: making one at home is cheap, and you can decide on finishing it, or not, much later.
Every country organizes pet aftercare its own way, and Norway is no exception. On any provider's list, look for three things: whether a print is included, what material it's made in, and whether it's taken before or after your pet leaves the clinic. Those answers matter more than the name on the van.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Norway
Burial is still the familiar path in Norway; cremation covers only about 49.27%[1] of the dead there, and some owners worry that making a keepsake of a pet's paw will seem odd to the neighbors. It isn't odd at all. A print is a quiet, gentle memorial, not unlike keeping a curl from a baby's first haircut. Make it for yourself, and share it only if and when you want to.
That Norway rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.
What owners in Norway typically pay for a print
Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[2] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[3]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Norway, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.
European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Norway what's included before you choose.

What Norway allows after your pet dies
Burial rules in many places, including Norway, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing that you want a print, and ask for a photo of it before cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified between pickup and return, so there's no doubt the print and ashes are theirs.
- Ask about fur clippings too; many providers can add a lock of fur to the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.

Are there rules about paw prints in Norway?
No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Norway cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.
Should I take a print of my senior pet now?
If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Norway say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.
What if my pet is cremated far from home?
In rural parts of Norway, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.
