Paw Print Keepsakes in Rogaland: what to know

Many owners in Rogaland take their pet's print long before the end, on a calm afternoon while their dog or cat is still a healthy senior. It's gentler, it gives a crisper result and it means the keepsake exists no matter how suddenly things change later. If your pet is still with you, that's the approach we'd suggest first.

Paw prints in Rogaland aren't only for dogs and cats. Horse owners keep hoof prints pressed into clay slabs, bird owners capture tiny feet in soft clay, and rabbit owners find that clay shows the long, furry shape of the hind foot better than ink. Each needs a slightly different approach, and each city page covers the basics.

How Rogaland thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

In Rogaland, only about 49.27%[1] of people are cremated, and many families still prefer a grave. A paw print can become part of that grave: pressed into a concrete stepping stone, cast in resin and set into a headstone, or kept at home while your pet rests in the garden. Take the print before burial, while the paw is still easy to position.

We take the Rogaland percentage from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It refers to people; attitudes to cremating a pet tend to follow it.

Paw print costs around Rogaland, line by line

We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Rogaland the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[2], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

Europe has more pet cats than dogs: about 108 million cats[3] against roughly 89.6 million dogs[4]. Cat paws are small and neat, so a print of all four often fits on one card or a single clay disc, and many crematoria include one for cats within the package. Before choosing a provider in Rogaland, ask whether VAT is included and whether the print is clay, ink or both.

What the law in Rogaland does and doesn't cover

If you might move away from Rogaland one day, it helps to know that a print, a cast or a photograph needs no paperwork at a border, while ashes sometimes do, and a grave can't come with you at all. None of that should decide your plans, but it's worth weighing alongside what Rogaland allows, set out below.

How to make sure a print is taken in time

  1. Choose one calm afternoon and do all the pets together, beginning with whichever one is least bothered by handling.
  2. Label everything before you start: a name on the back of each card, or a letter scratched into the underside of each clay disc.
  3. Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal then wipe each paw clean the moment you're done, so nobody licks ink off a housemate.
  4. Keep each turn short, no more than a minute or two each, and reward every press with a treat.
  5. Make a combined piece if you like: all the paws on one big card or slab of clay becomes a whole-family portrait.
  6. Store the set together and date each one on the reverse, so that years from now none of them has gone astray.

Turning a print into something lasting

If you plan to scatter some ashes, keep a pinch back before you do. A pendant with your pet's print on the front and a little ash inside is one of the most popular pairings, and our jewelry ash capacity guide shows how little each piece holds.

Questions people ask

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

Can my vet in Rogaland take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Rogaland say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

Is it better to use a local maker in Rogaland or order online?

Either works. A local jeweler, engraver or ceramic studio lets you see samples and hand the print over in person. Online makers usually work from a photo or scan, so the original stays at home. Ask for a proof before production and check the turnaround time.

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Rogaland?

Across Rogaland, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Rogaland?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
