Paw Print Keepsakes in Oslo

Paw Print Keepsakes in Oslo: what to know

Home euthanasia has become far more common across Oslo, and it has made paw prints easier. When the vet comes to you, the goodbye happens on your pet's own bed, with no waiting room and no rush to leave. Many home-visit vets carry a clay kit. Even if they don't, you can take your own print before they arrive, in a room your pet knows.

If you're in Oslo and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

What local funeral habits mean for a print

With cremation at only about 49.27%[1] for people in Oslo, many pets here are laid to rest in a yard or a field. If you'd like the print to mark the spot, keep the original indoors and put a copy outside. Rain, frost and sun wear away clay and ink within a season, while an engraved stone, a metal plate or a resin cast made from a scan will stand up to years of weather.

That Oslo rate is a human statistic published by Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023); there is no pet equivalent, so we use it as a signal of how families here already think.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Oslo the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[2], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

In Oslo, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[3], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[4].

Rules in Oslo that touch on keepsakes

Burial rules in many places, including Oslo, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

Getting a paw print in Oslo, step by step

  1. If your pet dies unexpectedly at the clinic, ask for a few minutes alone with them before you go. Staff will almost always allow this, and many can fetch a print kit for you there and then.
  2. Say exactly what you want: clay, ink, a nose print or all three, and how many copies.
  3. If you can't face doing it yourself, a nurse or technician can make the print while you step out of the room; ask them to show you the result before you head home.
  4. Get the crematory's name and your pet's reference number on paper from reception before you leave.
  5. If no print was taken, phone the crematory as early as you can the next day and request one at check-in.
  6. Leave the urn and the other extras for later. Of everything on offer, only the print has to be settled now.

Turning a print into something lasting

Some families bring the print out once a year, on the anniversary or on the day their pet came home, and add something new: a photo, a pressed flower, a note from each person. Over time the box or frame becomes a record of how the family carried the memory. If an anniversary hits harder than expected, you're not alone; in RSPCA research on pet loss, 66.9%[8] of owners were surprised by how intense their grief was.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Can children help make a paw print?

Often, yes, and many find it helps. Let them roll the clay, pick the frame or add their own handprint next to the paw. When the print is made after death, a vet or another adult can take it privately and show them the result. There are age-by-age ideas in our children's print-making guide.

Can my vet in Oslo take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Are there rules about paw prints in Oslo?

No. You can take, keep, post and display a paw print, cast or ashes pendant freely. The rules in Oslo cover burial and scattering, which matter if you plan a garden stone set with the print or want to scatter ashes after keeping a pinch for jewelry.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Oslo say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Oslo?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.
