Getting your pet's paw print in Madrid

Madrid, Spain

How owners in Madrid get a paw print

Spain has a strong tradition of niches, called nichos, for human remains, and some Madrid families like a similar idea for pets: a small urn kept in a dedicated spot at home or in a pet memorial space. Compact urns, photo urns and keepsake jewelry suit city flats where shelf space is limited. Engraving your pet's name and dates, or adding a small photo plaque, adds a personal touch.

On All Saints' Day, 1 November, many Spanish families visit cemeteries with flowers, and some extend that remembrance to pets with a candle beside the urn at home. A small memorial stone or plaque works well on a balcony or terrace, or in a window box of geraniums. Choose materials that handle fierce summer sun and winter frost without cracking or fading over the years.

In a city the size of Madrid, the question is rarely whether someone can take a paw print. Most general practices, emergency hospitals, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories here offer one. The risk is the opposite: a busy clinic handling several goodbyes a day can simply forget. If you want a print, say so when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether the original will come back with the ashes or separately.

With roughly 3,223,000 residents, Madrid is one of the Spain communities we cover.

For a second opinion on price, Valladolid (101 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Madrid routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

50.11%[1]

In 2024, cremations overtook burials in Spain for the first time: 50.11% of deaths (218,538 cremations).

~$32[2]

Paw-print add-ons at US crematories have a median price of about $32, from $10 to $76.

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

A pet at home in Madrid

How Spain thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

Roughly 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain end in cremation, which often means one family holds both preferences. A grandparent may want the dog buried under the apple tree while a younger owner would rather have ashes on the mantel. If that debate is happening in your house, start with the print. Everyone agrees on it, it has to come first anyway, and it buys you a calmer hour to decide the rest.

The Spain figure comes from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Weather in Madrid and your pet's print

Whatever the season in Madrid, take prints indoors in a comfortable room, not in direct sun or a cold garage. Dry the paw with a towel before using ink so it doesn't smudge, and tape the card down. Let clay dry on a rack at room temperature for two or three days, then seal it before framing or posting it anywhere.

What owners in Madrid typically pay for a print

We haven't found a published European price for a paw print on its own, so compare like with like. Ask two providers in Madrid the same three questions: is a print included, what is it made of, and can I see it before cremation? For scale, a Norwegian pet crematorium lists separate cremation from NOK 3,790 for pets up to 20 kg[4], and a print is typically a small fraction of that.

We keep the detailed Spain price table on one page so it stays current: see Spain prices.

Landlords, parks and permits in Spain

Nothing in Spain restricts a paw print, a nose print or a lock of fur. What local rules do shape is where ashes may go, and some favorite places, such as parks, beaches and trails, need the landowner's permission. If that permission is hard to get, a print can carry the memory of the place instead: frame it beside a photo taken there, or have the trail's name engraved under the paw.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Choose one calm afternoon and do all the pets together, beginning with whichever one is least bothered by handling.
  2. Label everything before you start: a name on the back of each card, or a letter scratched into the underside of each clay disc.
  3. Use a separate ink pad or wipe for each animal and clean every paw straight away, so no one licks ink off anyone else.
  4. Keep each turn short, no more than a minute or two each, and reward every press with a treat.
  5. Make a combined piece if you like: several paws on one large card or clay slab makes a family portrait.
  6. Store the set together with the date written on the back, so no print goes missing over the years.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

Tree and bio urns appeal to families with access to land outside the city, perhaps a family house in a village or a plot in the Sierra where a young pine or olive could grow. Check with the landowner before planting. Paw prints, fur keepsakes and engraved tags are small memorials that fit easily into a Madrid apartment and can travel to family elsewhere in Spain.

Questions people ask

Why does the Madrid page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024) reports about 50.11%[1] of Spain residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Will my vet or crematory take a paw print before cremation?

Most will if asked, and many include a clay or ink print in the package. But requests can be missed on a busy day, especially at emergency clinics. Mention it when you book, ask for it to be written on the aftercare form and ask whether it comes back to you that day or with the ashes. Once your pet has been cremated, the chance is gone.

Can I take a paw print or an ashes pendant through customs?

Paw prints in clay or on card are simply craft items and need no paperwork. Ashes are different: some countries and airlines ask for the cremation certificate and prefer ashes in hand luggage, in a container that can be screened. Carry the certificate from the crematorium, keep any jewelry holding ashes in your carry-on and check the airline's and the destination's rules before you travel from Madrid.

How do I stop an ink paw print from smudging?

Dry the paw with a towel first, tape the card to a hard surface and press straight down with steady pressure, then lift straight up without sliding. Too much ink blurs the pads, so dab lightly. Take three or four prints and keep the clearest. Let the ink dry fully before touching it, especially in humid weather.

How do I get my pet's paw print in Madrid?

You have three options. Take it yourself at home with clay or an ink kit, ideally while your pet is still well. Ask your vet or in-home euthanasia vet to take one at the appointment. Or ask the pet crematory to take one at intake, before cremation. Whichever you choose, ask for it in advance and check the print is clear before your pet leaves.

What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?

Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
