Paw Print Keepsakes in Spain

Paw Print Keepsakes in Spain: what to know

In Spain, most families arrange aftercare through their vet, who works with one or more pet crematoria. Prints are commonly offered but not always mentioned, so it's worth asking by name. You can also take a print yourself at home, which gives you full control over timing and the number of copies.

Every country organizes pet aftercare its own way, and Spain is no exception. On any provider's list, look for three things: whether a print is included, what material it's made in, and whether it's taken before or after your pet leaves the clinic. Those answers matter more than the name on the van.

We cover 17 communities in Spain, from Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia to smaller towns.

How Spain thinks about cremation, and why prints matter

About 50.11%[1] of people in Spain are cremated, so cremation and burial are both common. Pet owners are split the same way: some bury at home or in a pet cemetery, others choose cremation. Either way, a print should be taken first. With a burial you usually have more time and can do it yourself; with cremation, ask the vet or crematory when you book.

Source for the Spain figure: Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes

In Spain, your vet is usually the first contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium, which may offer a clay or ink paw print. Ask by name: a Pfotenabdruck in German, an empreinte de patte in French, a pootafdruk in Dutch. For comparison, a US crematory network lists a clay paw print at $76[2], and a UK studio casts small dog paws in resin from about £120[3].

European crematoria often price by package rather than by item. An Irish crematorium, for example, lists individual cremation from €250 for cats or dogs up to 10 kg[4]. A print is usually a modest extra within that, and jewelry or engraving from a print is priced separately by the maker. Ask providers in Spain what's included before you choose.

Burial, scattering and prints in Spain

Rules in Spain mostly cover the practical side of a pet's death: where a body can be buried, how deep, and where ashes may be scattered. None of it stops you taking a print. It's worth knowing, though, because a print set into a stone often goes where the burial or ashes go, and a landlord or homeowners' association can have its own say.

Your paw print plan for Spain

  1. Mention the print when you book rather than waiting until the appointment itself, whether that's the euthanasia or the cremation. Ask the team to note it on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
  3. Ask for two copies when several people at home would each like their own.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print while your pet is still at the clinic; a smudged one can then be done again.
  5. Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
  6. Keep the paperwork so you can match the print, the ashes and the invoice when they arrive.

Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up

If you'd like ashes and the print together without wearing them, an ashes-in-glass piece needs only about 1/8–1/2 tsp[7] of ashes, and the paw can be engraved on its base or a matching frame. Use our jewelry ash capacity guide to see how far your pet's ashes will go, and our ashes sharing planner if several people want a piece.

If Spain is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Spain?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

Should I take a print of my senior pet now?

If you can, yes. A relaxed, living pet usually gives the crispest print, and there's no time pressure. Choose a calm, good day, after a meal or a walk, and take several so you can keep the clearest. Many owners in Spain say the afternoon itself becomes a memory.

What do other owners in Spain choose for a paw print keepsake?

We don't publish made-up figures on that. We do run short, anonymous polls on what readers chose, from clay discs to engraved jewelry, and you can see the live results. They count one vote per person and aren't a scientific survey, but they give a feel for how other owners decided.

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Spain?

Across Spain, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.

What if my pet is cremated far from home?

In rural parts of Spain, pets are often cremated in a larger town some distance away. Take the print locally before collection, yourself or through your vet, so you can check it. Many crematories also take one at intake as a backup and return it with the ashes.

How many communities do you cover in Spain?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 17 communities in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.
