Brighton, England
Who takes paw prints in Brighton
Brighton has a strong creative streak, and memorials here are often personal and a little unconventional: a hand-thrown ceramic urn, a piece of glass art with ashes inside, a painted portrait from a favourite photo. If you'd like something made by a local maker, a private cremation with ashes returned gives you time to find the right piece. Brighton has no shortage of independent studios.
Many Brighton homes are flats with little or no outdoor space, so compact memorials are popular: a hand-made urn on a bookshelf, a paw print on the wall, or jewellery with a pinch of ashes set in glass. If family or friends want their own keepsake, ask for the ashes to be divided first. Small pieces also move easily between flats.
Some crematories and keepsake makers serving Brighton are based a drive away, around London or along main roads out of town. That's normal, and it doesn't stop you getting a print. Clay prints travel perfectly well once they're dry, and most engravers, jewelers and artists work from a clear photo or scan, so the original never needs to leave your home.
Brighton's population is around 290,000, the 12th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. London, roughly 47 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Brighton run from there.
Families in Brighton often end up using a provider from Guildford (34 miles), Portsmouth (42 miles) and Richmond (45 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
87,000
How many dog- or cat-owning households Brighton has (estimate)
How we calculated this
290,000 ÷ 2.4 = 120,833 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 87,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
7,100
Brighton families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
87,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 7,100 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Cremation habits in England and the print window
When roughly 83.0%[5] of human funerals in England end in cremation, the whole system is built for speed, and pet aftercare often runs the same way. Collection can be booked for the same afternoon, and some crematories cremate within a day or two. That efficiency is a kindness, but it also shrinks the time in which a print can be taken. Ask how soon cremation will happen, and if it's quick, take the print yourself before collection.

When the weather works against clay and ink
Local weather in Brighton affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Paw print prices: kits, add-ons and finishing
If you're thinking beyond a clay print, UK makers publish prices for ash jewellery that you can pair with an engraved print. Handmade pet-ash pendants from one maker start at £180 to £299[6], and a glass pet-ashes pendant from a Bath studio costs £170[7]. The print itself is usually the cheapest part; the finishing is what to budget for in Brighton.

Landlords, parks and permits in England
There are no rules about taking a paw print; it's yours to do at home, at the clinic or at the crematory. Where England does have rules is what happens next: whether your pet can be buried at home and where ashes can be scattered. Those choices can affect your print too, for example if you want it set into a garden stone or a grave marker.
In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.
Start with the England rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Brighton's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Skip the table. Bring the clay or card to wherever your pet likes to lie, on the floor or on their own bed.
- Recruit a second person to stroke and reassure your pet while you work on the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats so your pet stays focused ahead and doesn't keep turning around.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Work with the position it's in: slip a board beneath the paw and raise the clay to it.
- Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
- Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.
Ways families in Brighton keep a print close
Outdoor memorials in Brighton face salt air, wind and plenty of rain. Granite, slate and bronze stand up well, while untreated metal can corrode near the sea and printed plaques fade. On a balcony or small courtyard, a planter with a hardy coastal plant is a living memorial that copes with the breeze. Rinse salt spray off outdoor pieces now and then so they keep their finish.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to London to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in London (roughly 47 miles from Brighton) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Roughly how many pets die in Brighton each year?
Our estimate is around 7,100. It comes from Brighton's population (about 290,000), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 87,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
How do England attitudes to cremation compare?
Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) puts the England human cremation rate at about 83.0%[5]. We show it on the Brighton page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Brighton?
The closest communities we cover are Guildford (about 34 miles), Portsmouth (about 42 miles) and Richmond (about 45 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Brighton too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
My pet was cremated without a paw print. Is there anything I can do?
You can't take a new impression after cremation, but there are good alternatives. Look through your photos for a clear shot of a paw, or of paw prints in snow, sand or mud; engravers and artists can trace one. Check old vet records, the puppy or kitten pack from a breeder, and grooming photos. Some artists can also draw a lifelike paw from pictures of your pet's feet. It won't be the exact pad pattern, but many owners find it just as meaningful.
Is ink safe on my pet's paw?
Use a pet-safe, non-toxic, water-based ink made for paw prints, not a stamp pad or permanent marker. Wipe the paw clean straight afterwards with a damp cloth or unscented pet wipe and dry between the toes so your pet doesn't lick any off. For fluffy paws, cats and anxious pets, an inkless kit, where a special wipe reacts with treated paper, avoids ink on fur altogether.
