Who takes paw prints in Southampton
Southampton has a long habit of remembering: its memorials to the Titanic's crew, many of them local, stand in the city's parks. That sense of place carries into how some families remember a pet, with an engraved stone in the garden, a small urn on the mantelpiece, or a keepsake pendant. In a terrace or flat, something indoors is often more practical than a garden piece.
Southampton Common, the shoreline along Southampton Water and the heaths and woods of the New Forest are places many local owners shared with their animals. The Forest is managed land with its own byelaws, so ask the relevant authority before scattering anything there. A common compromise is to keep the urn at home and take a pinch in a small keepsake to that favorite spot.
Some crematories and keepsake makers serving Southampton are based a drive away, around Brighton or along main roads out of town. That's normal, and it doesn't stop you getting a print. Clay prints travel perfectly well once they're dry, and most engravers, jewelers and artists work from a clear photo or scan, so the original never needs to leave your home.
With roughly 253,000 residents, Southampton is the 14th-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Southampton are based about 55 miles away in Brighton, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Winchester (11 miles), Portsmouth (15 miles) and Reading (42 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Southampton routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
76,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Southampton
How we calculated this
253,000 ÷ 2.4 = 105,417 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 76,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
6,200
Estimated dog and cat losses in Southampton each year
How we calculated this
76,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 6,200 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Local customs and the keepsake you keep
Cremation is the norm for people in England (about 83.0%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
That England rate is a human one, published by Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). We quote it for Southampton only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Heat, humidity, cold and drying times
If you're thinking of an outdoor memorial in Southampton, such as a garden stone with your pet's print pressed in, the weather decides when to make it. Concrete doesn't cure well in frost or fierce heat. Take the print now in clay or ink and keep it indoors, then make the stone in a mild month when the ground is workable.

Paw print costs around Southampton, line by line
Many UK vet practices send every pet to the same crematorium: 60%[6] of independent practices that answered the CMA had an exclusive contract with one. So the print you're offered in Southampton is usually whatever that crematorium makes. If you'd like something different, such as a flat ink print for engraving or a resin cast (one studio charges from £120 for a small dog[7]), take it yourself or ask for your pet to go elsewhere.

Rules in England that touch on keepsakes
You don't need anyone's permission to take your pet's paw print, and prints, casts and ashes jewelry can be kept, posted or carried anywhere. The rules that matter in England are about burial and scattering. If you plan a home burial, take the print before you begin; if you plan to scatter, keep some ashes back for a print pendant first.
In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the England level first; our England rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Southampton or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Tell your child what's happening in plain words, then offer them a part in making the print if they want one. Our guide to print-making with children has age-by-age ideas for what they can do.
- Give them a real job: rolling the clay, choosing the card color or writing the name.
- Let them press a hand or fingerprint beside the paw if they want to.
- If the print is taken after death, leave the pressing to an adult or the vet, then let your child see the result.
- Make a copy for your child's room, so the original can stay somewhere safe.
- Come back to it later. One child wants it framed the same week; another won't look at it for months.
Shelf, wall or garden: where the print ends up
Southampton's large student and port-working population means many families have relatives spread across the UK and abroad. Dividing ashes into mini urns or pendants lets each household keep a share. Paw print impressions and a lock of fur are worth requesting at the first conversation, since they have to be made before cremation, and a garden stone can always be added later.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in England?
For people, yes: about 83.0%[5] of England deaths end in cremation, according to Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Southampton follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
How many pet owners live in Southampton?
By our estimate, about 76,000 households in Southampton have at least one dog or cat, and around 6,200 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 253,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Will I have to travel to Brighton to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Brighton (roughly 55 miles from Southampton) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Southampton?
Usually yes. Winchester is about 11 miles away, Portsmouth is about 15 miles away and Reading is about 42 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
If my pet dies at the vet, can I take them home to make my own print?
In most cases, yes, and plenty of owners do. One large UK vet group told the CMA that about 29% of owners whose pet died in practice took the pet home to make their own arrangements[9]. That gives you time to take a print yourself before choosing a crematorium or a home burial. Ask the practice for a blanket or a box for the journey, and let them know if you'd still like them to arrange cremation later.
Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?
It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
