Keeping your pet's paw print in Windsor, England

Windsor, England

Home, clinic or crematory: paw prints in Windsor

The Long Walk, running nearly three miles from the castle into Windsor Great Park, and the Thames riverside are places many local people connect with memories. If you want to scatter ashes, remember that the park and much of the land here is managed with its own rules, so check first. Keeping a little ash back gives you a keepsake to hold on to.

Windsor is a town where ceremony and history are woven into ordinary days, and many families lean toward memorials with a sense of dignity: an engraved slate plaque, a polished wooden casket, or a small ring or locket that carries a pinch of ash. In a terraced house or flat, something for the mantel or windowsill often works better than a piece meant for the garden.

One advantage of a town like Windsor is that people know each other. Your vet team has probably met your pet many times and will understand why a print matters. Small practices often keep a clay kit on the shelf for exactly this. If they don't, ask whether you can bring your own and take the print together in a quiet room.

About 32,000 people live in Windsor, which makes it the 32nd-largest of the 33 England communities we cover. Reading, roughly 16 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Windsor run from there.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Richmond (13 miles), Reading (16 miles, a larger centre) and Guildford (17 miles, a larger centre), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Our estimate

9,600

Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Windsor

How we calculated this

32,000 ÷ 2.4 = 13,333 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 9,600. A household with several pets counts once.

Our estimate

780

Windsor families who lose a dog or cat each year (estimate)

How we calculated this

9,600 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 780 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

41%[1]

41% of UK households own a dog.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

31%[3]

31% of UK households own a cat.

11.74 years[4]

UK cats have a life expectancy at birth of 11.74 years.

None of the figures on this this page are ours alone: they rest on Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and UK Pet Food (formerly PFMA) Pet Population 2026.

A pet at home in Windsor

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

In England, about 83.0%[5] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this familiar, pet crematories are well established and a paw print is often a standard line on the price list. The catch is that standard can mean automatic. Ask what kind of print they take, whether you can see it before cremation and whether you can have a second copy.

The England percentage above is from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Windsor, not as a count of pets.

Weather in Windsor and your pet's print

Local weather in Windsor affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Windsor

Paw print costs around Windsor, line by line

UK paw print prices are rarely published, because most are sold as add-ons through vets and crematoria. That's changing: under the CMA's remedies, vet practices must set out prices for communal, individual and add-on cremation options[6], so it's reasonable to ask for a written list in Windsor. For a 3D keepsake, one UK body-casting studio charges from about £120 to cast a small dog's paw pads in resin, with medium and large breeds about a fifth and a third more[7].

Landlords, parks and permits in England

Paw prints sit outside most regulation, but the aftercare around them doesn't. Your local council or city, and the wider rules for England, may limit burying a pet at home and scattering ashes in public places. Check the notes below before you plan a garden memorial with your pet's print pressed into it.

In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the England level first; our England rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Windsor or your HOA adds anything.

In order: the print, the aftercare, the keepsake

  1. Mention the print when you book the euthanasia appointment or cremation, not on the day. Ask for it to be written on the aftercare form.
  2. Ask what kind they take: some clinics do clay only, some ink, some both. If there's any chance you'll want jewelry made, request an ink or inkless version too.
  3. Ask for two copies if more than one person in the family would like one.
  4. Ask to see or photograph the print before your pet leaves the clinic, so it can be retaken if it's smudged.
  5. Check how it comes back: with you that day, or with the ashes later, and how it's labeled.
  6. Keep the paperwork so that, once everything is returned, the invoice, ashes and print can be tied together.

Keeping the print and the memory close

Riverside Windsor gardens tend to be damp and shaded, and moss creeps over porous stone within a few winters. Polished granite or slate keeps an inscription crisp, and a sheltered corner near the house protects it further. A rose, a small tree or a bed of spring bulbs planted with ashes can become a living memorial for households planning to stay. Families in rented flats near the centre may prefer a planter they can take with them.

Questions people ask

How many pet owners live in Windsor?

By our estimate, about 9,600 households in Windsor have at least one dog or cat, and around 780 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 32,000, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Windsor?

Usually yes. Richmond is about 13 miles away, Reading is about 16 miles away and Guildford is about 17 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Windsor page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024) reports about 83.0%[5] of England residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

Will I have to travel to Reading to arrange things?

Not usually. Providers based in Reading (roughly 16 miles from Windsor) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.

If my pet dies at the vet, can I take them home to make my own print?

In most cases, yes, and plenty of owners do. One large UK vet group told the CMA that about 29% of owners whose pet died in practice took the pet home to make their own arrangements[9]. That gives you time to take a print yourself before choosing a crematorium or a home burial. Ask the practice for a blanket or a box for the journey, and let them know if you'd still like them to arrange cremation later.

Will the crematory send the paw print back with the ashes?

It depends on the provider. Some take the print at intake and return it with the ashes; others hand it to your vet or post it separately. Ask how the print is labeled and when it will come back, and ask for a photo of it before cremation so you know it's clear. If you'd rather not wait, take your own before collection.
