Paw Print Keepsakes in Scotland: what to know

If you're in Scotland and your pet's health is starting to fail, a short plan helps: who you'd call, where your pet would go and what you'd like to keep. The print is the only part of that plan with a deadline. Our planning page walks through the rest, and each city page adds local weather, prices and rules.

Many owners in Scotland take their pet's print long before the end, on a calm afternoon while their dog or cat is still a healthy senior. It's gentler, it gives a crisper result and it means the keepsake exists no matter how suddenly things change later. If your pet is still with you, that's the approach we'd suggest first.

We cover 4 communities in Scotland, from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to smaller towns.

Our estimate

465,000

Estimated pet-owning households across the communities we cover in Scotland

How we calculated this

The sum of our per-city estimates for the 4 communities in Scotland on this site: each city's population ÷ national average household size × the national share of households with a pet. Households with several pets count once.

Ashes, graves and the print that comes first

Because roughly 74.5%[1] of people in Scotland are cremated, ashes jewelry and keepsake urns are familiar here. A paw print pairs naturally with them: an urn engraved with your pet's actual paw, or a pendant with the print on the front and a pinch of ashes inside. If that appeals, ask for a clear flat print that a maker can work from.

Source for the Scotland figure: Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It describes human funerals and is here as context, not as a count of pets.

What paw print keepsakes cost in Scotland

If you're thinking beyond a clay print, UK makers publish prices for ash jewellery that you can pair with an engraved print. Handmade pet-ash pendants from one maker start at £180 to £299[2], and a glass pet-ashes pendant from a Bath studio costs £170[3]. The print itself is usually the cheapest part; the finishing is what to budget for in Scotland.

The CMA found that only 2%[4] of UK vet practice websites showing prices listed cremation prices at all, so the cost of a paw print is rarely visible online. The CMA's final remedies change that: practices must now set out add-on prices[5]. In Scotland, ask for the list, find the print line and compare it with an independent crematorium; the CMA counted 96 independent pet crematoria sites across the UK[6].

What the law in Scotland does and doesn't cover

Burial rules in many places, including Scotland, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.

In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

A short checklist for a clean print

  1. Take a breath. If your pet has just died at home, there is usually time for a print in the first few hours. Lay them on a towel in a cool room.
  2. Gather what you need: a damp cloth, and either clay you've softened between your palms or a sheet of card fixed to a board alongside a pet-safe ink pad.
  3. If the leg has stiffened, bring the clay to the paw. Ease it onto the pads with light pressure; don't try to push the foot down.
  4. Take a nose print too if you'd like one, with a light touch of ink or an inkless wipe.
  5. Call your vet or crematory afterwards, and let them know a print has already been made so they can skip that step.
  6. Let the print dry indoors, away from heaters and sunny windows, before you frame or post it anywhere.

From paw print to pendant, frame or garden stone

A scan of the print can become a small rubber stamp, the kind a stationery or print shop makes from any clean black-and-white image. Some families use it on birthday cards, the inside cover of a photo album or the corner of a letter to a friend who knew the pet. It's an everyday way to keep their paw in circulation, and it costs far less than jewelry.

If Scotland is not quite where you are, all locations has the rest. Otherwise the services page, the tools and the poll results are the useful next stops.

Questions people ask

Where do most UK owners arrange a pet's cremation?

Through their vet. In the CMA's research, 78%[9] of UK cremation buyers purchased through their vet or on the vet's recommendation, and 89%[10] didn't compare providers at all. That's why it pays to ask your vet directly about a paw print, or to contact an independent crematorium yourself. The CMA's findings set out how the market works.

How many communities do you cover in Scotland?

We have local paw print keepsake guides for 4 communities in Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Each page covers timing, weather, local prices and how to ask your vet or crematory for a print.

Where can I get a paw print keepsake in Scotland?

Across Scotland, most vets, in-home euthanasia vets and pet crematories can take a clay or ink paw print, usually before cremation. You can also take one yourself at home with a kit. For jewelry, engraving or art, local makers and online studios both work from a clear print or a scan. Ask for the print when you book aftercare, not afterwards.

Can my vet in Scotland take a paw print before cremation?

Almost always, if you ask in time. Mention it when you book the appointment or the cremation, ask for it on the aftercare form and ask to see it before your pet leaves. If the vet can't, the crematory can usually take one at intake. After cremation, it's too late.

Can I get more than one copy of my pet's print in Scotland?

Yes. Request two prints from your vet or crematory at the time of booking; it's a common request and usually costs little extra. Ink prints take seconds, so a home session can produce as many as you like. If you only have one original, scan it and have copies printed, engraved or cast, so every person in the family has their own without anyone giving up the original.

Can I get a hoof print from a horse in Scotland?

Yes. Ask your farrier to trim and clean the hoof, then press it into a thick clay slab or paint the sole with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Many horse owners also keep the last shoe and a braid of tail hair. Do it while your horse is still well if you can.
