Paw print keepsakes in Aberdeen: where to start
Aberdeen's tenements and flats often have little outdoor space, so compact memorials suit many households: a small urn on a shelf, a framed paw print or a piece of jewellery holding a little ash. Families with a garden sometimes choose a stone, perhaps granite, which feels fitting in the Granite City. If you're likely to move, choose something portable. Granite also weathers the salt wind well.
The North Sea coast, the rivers and the hills of Deeside draw many Aberdeen families towards natural memorials. Water-soluble urns are made for release at sea or on a river, and a biodegradable urn can nourish a tree planted in a garden. If you'd like to scatter ashes on the coast or in the hills, get permission from the landowner and choose a calm day.
Mid-sized practices in Aberdeen often share weekend and evening cover with other clinics, so the vet on duty when your pet dies may not know you. A simple fix: ask your regular clinic to add a note to your pet's record saying you want a paw print before collection. It takes a receptionist thirty seconds, and the request is then there for whoever opens the file, even if you're too upset to mention it yourself.
Aberdeen is home to about 228,000 people, the 3rd-largest of the 4 Scotland communities we cover.
Our pages for Dundee (58 miles), Edinburgh (93 miles, a larger centre) and Glasgow (121 miles, a larger centre) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Aberdeen as well.
Our estimate
68,500
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Aberdeen
How we calculated this
228,000 ÷ 2.4 = 95,000 households; × 41% (dog) + 31% (cat) = 68,500. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
5,600
Estimated dog and cat losses in Aberdeen each year
How we calculated this
68,500 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.74 yrs) ≈ 5,600 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation habits in Scotland and the print window
Cremation is the norm for people in Scotland (about 74.5%[5] of deaths), and pet crematories there tend to offer a long menu of extras: paw prints, nose prints, fur clippings, name plates, photo urns. It's easy to feel you ought to say yes to everything. You don't have to. Pick the one or two things you'll actually look at in five years' time. For many families, that's a clear print and a small lock of fur.
That Scotland rate is a human one, published by Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). We quote it for Aberdeen only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
Weather in Aberdeen and your pet's print
Local weather in Aberdeen affects a paw print more than you might think. In hot, dry spells, air-dry clay can crack if it dries too fast, so dry it slowly indoors and turn it often. In humid months it stays soft for longer, so be patient. In cold weather, warm the clay in your hands and never let plaster freeze before it has set.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
The CMA found that only 2%[6] of UK vet practice websites showing prices listed cremation prices at all, so the cost of a paw print is rarely visible online. The CMA's final remedies change that: practices must now set out add-on prices[7]. In Aberdeen, ask for the list, find the print line and compare it with an independent crematorium; the CMA counted 96 independent pet crematoria sites across the UK[8].
The full price table by product is on our Scotland page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

Burial, scattering and prints in Scotland
Burial rules in many places, including Scotland, exist partly because the drugs used in euthanasia stay in the body and can harm wildlife or other pets that dig. A print carries none of those concerns, which is why no one regulates it. If you're choosing between a home burial and cremation, the notes below cover what's allowed here; take the print before either.
In the UK, most families arrange cremation through their vet, and the CMA's 2026 remedies require practices to set out prices for add-on options as well as communal and individual cremation. Ask for a paw print by name and get the price in writing. Independent pet crematoria often take clay or ink prints too, and UK winters are damp, so give air-dry clay extra time to dry indoors before you frame or post it.
The rules that apply across Scotland (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Scotland page. Aberdeen may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
A short checklist for a clean print
- Skip the table. Take the clay or card to your pet instead, wherever they're comfortable, whether that's their bed or a patch of floor.
- Recruit a second person to stroke and reassure your pet while you work on the paw.
- Use a lick mat or a few treats so your pet stays focused ahead and doesn't keep turning around.
- Don't straighten a stiff leg. Slide a board under the paw and bring the clay up to meet it.
- Stop after a few tries if your pet gets stressed. Try again tomorrow, or ask your vet to help at the next visit.
- Try an inkless kit for a pet who can't stand wet feet, since it leaves nothing behind to clean up.
Remembering your pet through their print
Many Aberdeen families have relatives spread across Scotland and abroad, partly because of the city's oil and gas connections, so sharing ashes is a common wish. Small keepsake urns and jewellery let several people keep something. There's no need to decide straight away. Bring ashes home in a simple container and choose lasting pieces once everyone has had a say.

Questions people ask
Is Aberdeen big enough to have several pet aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 68,500 Aberdeen households keep a dog or cat and around 5,600 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 228,000), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is cremation common in Scotland?
For people, yes: about 74.5%[5] of Scotland deaths end in cremation, according to Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Aberdeen follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Aberdeen?
The closest communities we cover are Dundee (about 58 miles), Edinburgh (about 93 miles) and Glasgow (about 121 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Aberdeen too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
If my pet dies at the vet, can I take them home to make my own print?
In most cases, yes, and plenty of owners do. One large UK vet group told the CMA that about 29% of owners whose pet died in practice took the pet home to make their own arrangements[10]. That gives you time to take a print yourself before choosing a crematorium or a home burial. Ask the practice for a blanket or a box for the journey, and let them know if you'd still like them to arrange cremation later.
Can I get a hoof print from my horse?
Yes. Most owners take one after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the hoof: pick out the sole, dry it and press it into a thick slab of clay on a board, or paint it with non-toxic paint and press it onto heavy card. Someone should hold the foot steady. Many owners also keep the last shoe and a length of tail hair.
Do UK vets have to tell me the price of a paw print?
Under the CMA's remedies, UK vet practices must offer a communal cremation option and set out the prices of communal, individual and add-on options[7], which covers extras such as prints. It's reasonable to ask for a written price list. You can also contact an independent pet crematorium directly; 89%[11] of UK cremation buyers didn't compare providers at all.
