Getting a paw print in Foley: the local picture
Retirees in Foley often have children and grandchildren spread across the country, so memorials that can be shared or shipped are useful. Small keepsakes, prints and paw impressions all travel easily. Before ordering, ask how much ash to expect for your pet's size, what engraving or photo work costs and how long delivery takes, and get the cremation and memorial priced together in writing.
Between the Gulf beaches, Bon Secour Bay and the slow creeks west of town, water is part of how many Foley residents spend their time, and some want a final moment there. Before you take ashes out on a boat or onto a public beach, look up the rules for that place and for scattering at sea. Splitting ashes, so some stay home in an urn or keepsake, keeps options open for later.
Farm and country homes around Foley often have animals that city guides forget. A horse's hoof print is best taken after the farrier has trimmed and cleaned the foot, pressed into a thick clay slab or painted onto heavy card. Keep the last shoe as well. For chickens, ducks or a pet parrot, very soft clay shows the delicate toes far better than ink.
With roughly 30,354 residents, Foley is the 21st-largest of the 37 Alabama communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Mobile, about 30 miles (49 km) away, which is where some providers serving Foley are based.
Our pages for Fairhope (15 miles), Daphne (20 miles) and Pensacola (29 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Foley as well.
Our estimate
11,000
Estimated dog- or cat-owning households in Foley
How we calculated this
30,354 ÷ 2.5 = 12,142 households; × 53% (dog) + 39% (cat) = 11,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
930
dog and cat deaths per year in Foley, our estimate
How we calculated this
11,000 dog/cat-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs + cat: 11.18 yrs) ≈ 930 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Burial, cremation and paw prints in Alabama
Burial is still more common than cremation for people in Alabama, where about 42.3%[5] are cremated. Many pet owners here bury too, often on their own land where that's allowed. That gives you something city cremation doesn't: time. You can take a paw print at home, calmly, before the burial, with no one waiting at the door.
The Alabama percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Foley, not as a count of pets.
Getting a clean print in Foley in any season
Ink behaves differently in the Foley heat. Pet-safe ink pads dry out quickly in warm rooms, which gives a patchy print, and a warm, damp paw can slide and smudge. Take ink prints in the coolest room of the house, with the air conditioning on, and dry the paw with a towel first. Press straight down, lift straight up and take three or four prints so you can keep the clearest.
Summers in Foley are hot: July averages highs around 91°F. Heat is hard on air-dry clay. In dry heat the surface skins over and cracks before the inside has set, so dry your print slowly indoors, away from sunny windows and air vents, and turn it every few hours. In humid heat the opposite happens: the clay stays soft for days, so be patient and don't try to speed it up in the oven unless the kit says it's bakeable.

Budgeting for a print and what it becomes
Engraving is the add-on that surprises people. By our estimate, name-and-dates engraving adds about 36%[6] to the price of a mid-priced wooden urn, and a paw print costs extra again. Before you pay for either in Foley, check your pet insurance: some wellness add-ons reimburse end-of-life costs, and one plan's add-on could pay up to $650 toward cremation, burial and keepsakes[7]. Read the policy wording, then ask for an itemized quote.

What the law in Alabama does and doesn't cover
Renters in Alabama often can't bury a pet in the yard without the landlord's agreement, and even where they can, the grave stays behind when the lease ends. That's one reason portable memorials such as prints are so popular. The notes below set out what Alabama allows for burial and scattering; whatever they say, a print moves with you to the next address.
The official Alabama local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Foley.
The rules that apply across Alabama (home burial, scattering and who oversees pet cremation) are summarized on our Alabama page. Foley may add its own conditions, so check with the city or county before digging.
How to make sure a print is taken in time
- Decide who will take the print: you, your vet, or the crematory when your pet arrives. Whoever does it earliest gives you the most say over the result.
- Tell the crematory in writing you'd like a print, and request a picture of it ahead of the cremation.
- Ask how your pet is identified from collection to return, so the print and the ashes definitely belong together.
- Ask about fur clippings at the same time; many providers offer one with the print.
- Plan the finishing later. Jewelry or artwork can wait as long as it needs to; make that choice once you feel ready.
- If you'd like help, send us a few details; we'll write back by email laying out the options.
Turning a print into something lasting
Foley's yards are full of camellias, azaleas and palms, and many families want a memorial that fits a coastal garden: a stone among the shrubs, a planter by the lanai or a keepsake with a beach feel. Others keep ashes indoors. Because hurricanes can bring wind and flooding, an indoor memorial or one that's easy to lift and move may be the more practical choice here.

Questions people ask
How does Foley's weather affect pet aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Foley, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Roughly how many pets die in Foley each year?
Our estimate is around 930. It comes from Foley's population (about 30,354), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog or cat (about 11,000 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Where are the providers that serve Foley actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Mobile, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Foley and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Foley?
The closest communities we cover are Fairhope (about 15 miles), Daphne (about 20 miles) and Pensacola (about 29 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Foley too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Why take a paw print in Foley if I already have plenty of photos?
Photos show what your pet looked like; a print records something you touched every day, at actual size. We estimate Foley has around 11,000 dog- or cat-owning homes and loses about 930 of those pets a year. Most of those owners have hundreds of photos. The difference is that photos can be found later, while a print only exists if someone makes it before the body is cremated or buried, which is why it's worth doing first.
What if my family can't agree who keeps the print?
Take several. Clay can be re-rolled and ink prints are quick, so there's no reason to stop at one. If the original is already made, photograph or scan it and have copies made: framed ink prints, small engraved tags or matching pendants. Our ashes sharing planner can help if you're dividing ashes between keepsakes too.
